In your standard dictatorship, activists are brought out back and shot. In the United States' crypto-dictatorship, activists are bullied by the state until they go bankrupt - or as in the case of activist and Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz, made to crack under the constant pressure, and commit suicide.

Condolences to his family. Seemed like a gifted individual. He chose his own path in life. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way he took a wrong turn. Granted, the Fed’s were probably a bit heavy-handed with their prosecution but he put himself in that situation. It’s entirely possible to protest and make a point without engaging in criminal behavior. In the end, the prospect of spending 30 years in prison and his ongoing battle with depression were probably more than he could handle.
