Question What happen to the Republican Party

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democ...(United_States)

    Black Americans

From the end of the Civil War,*African Americansprimarily favored the Republican Party due to its overwhelming political and more tangible efforts in achieving abolition, particularly through President Lincoln's*Emancipation Proclamation.[47]*The south had long been a Democratic stronghold, favoring a state's right to legal slavery. In addition, the ranks of the fledglingKu Klux Klan*were composed almost entirely of white Democrats angry over poor treatment by northerners and bent on reversing the policies ofReconstruction

This is a honest question. Republicans should have the black vote on lock.

This is a honest question. Republicans should have the black vote on lock.
When Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 he famously commented "we've (Democrats) lost the south for generations"--or something very close to that. White Southerners began to migrate to the R party and blacks to the D party. Then Nixon embraced the "southern strategy" and the trends hardened.

I happen to think that the stranglehold Dems have on the black vote is not a good thing and that many Dem policies have not been to the benefit of the black population. Many traditional conservative ideas should appeal to blacks I think. The problem is the continuation of ugly dialogue that comes from some Republican sources--the dog whistles, the racist attitudes--Willy Horton, Reagan famous (and untrue) reference to the "welfare queen driving a Cadillac", that goofball ex-governor referring to Obama "shucking and jiving", and most recently the efforts to suppress voting in predominantly black areas. This is certainly NOT a issue with the majority of Republicans but until they clearly divorce themselves from this nonsense, they will continue to drive blacks away.

Cause and effect. Not rocket science.

    My humble opinion.

Hmmmmm. Just did some more research. Looks like the change started with desegregation of the armed forces. I guess Truman saw the future. The last straw was the civil rights act. Nixon's campaign manager exploited the anger of the racist Dems. The only problem he didn't think the black population would grow so much. He knew blacks would leave the party but he thought angry Dems switching over was more lucrative. Hmmmmm.

    From: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy

The strategy was first adopted under future Republican President*Richard Nixon*and Republican Senator*Barry Goldwater[6]*in the late 1960s.[7]*The strategy was successful in many regards. It contributed to the*electoral realignment*of Southern states to the Republican Party, but at the expense of losing more than 90 percent of black voters to the Democratic Party.*

Also from the article. Nixon campaign manager said From now on, the Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote and they don't need any more than that...but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the*Voting Rights Act. The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats.[2]

Looks like the pubs did it to themselves.
