Fundraising for the 2014 gubernatorial is off to a big start!

It already looks like this race will not even be close, at least between the two main political parties here in Maryland.

Blaine Young, one of the leading potential Republican contenders for governor in 2014, has reported that he met the funding goal he set when he announced he was considering a possible race last year.

Young, president of the Frederick County Board of Commissioners, stole a march on his potential Republican rivals by filing his required campaign finance report ahead of Wednesday night's deadline.

Young, a favorite of the conservative wing of the party, reported raising almost $450,000 -- exceeding his interim goal of $300,000 by nearly 50 percent. He reported that he closed out the reporting period with more than $340,000 in cash on hand.

And meanwhile ~ Doug Gansler already has $5.2 million in the bank!

Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler, who is eyeing a run for governor, has $5.2 million in his campaign account, a formidable sum more than a year out from the 2014 primary election.

I do not vote based on party affiliation, but on the issues. I would never vote for Young, even in the Republican primary. So ~ between the two of them right now ~ I would support Gansler because I am very liberal on most social issues but I also support the death penalty. And so does Mr. Gansler.

Young doesn't have a chance and I do not support Tea Party candidates.

If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on HarCo Exec. David Craig winning he GOP nomination.

The failure to file -- and the silence of the Craig team -- raise questions about whether the Harford executive had a disappointing fundraising year. Before 2010 Craig, a popular county executive with experience in the General Assembly, would have been an obvious front-runner. But with the ascendence of the tea party movement, the candidacy of Blaine Young, the staunchly conservative president of the Frederick County Board of Commissioners, looks increasingly credible.

Young filed his report early, showing that he raised neary $450,000 for his stlll-unannounced campaign for governor.

For filing his report late Craig would have to pay a relatively small fine, but the political fallout could far exceed the financial impact. The biggest casualty could be the perception of Craig as the front-runner for the GOP nomination.

If I was running for governor, I would simply state, "I'm a Democrat, you are all morons and I'm going to raise taxes/fees/whatever." People would think they were getting 4 more years of O'Malley and I'd win in a landslide.

He didn't win in a landslide, but wasn't that basically the same plan the Ehrlich campaign used during his three gubernatorial runs ~ including when he won ~ and used all those dirty tactics claiming Democrat support and targeting those communities with large numbers of minority voters with false and misleading statements and dirty tricks?

Ehrlich originally won because of slots and KKT not being well liked because of Glendening.

Ehrlich's plan against O'Malley was basically, "I'm a Republican, come on!" Didn't work too well.

LOL! It doesn’t take long. The very first comment following the story already blames the current~governor for Craig's campaign filing failure and starts with an “Adolf O’Malley” NAZI comparison.

Since I don't know exactly how the filing works, I would think that it is possible that he had it in on time (assuming a midnight deadline), and it is not wholly unreasonable that it is not posted online within 28 minutes of a midnight deadline (or that the Craig people aren't answering their phone in the middle of the night).

Or, Craig missed the deadline. Big whoop. I'm sure the voters aren't going to look at that as a major fault.


(and I post this as someone who is not completely sold on Craig. He has his warts, to be sure. But to get all atwitter over the lack of a campaign report that was probably due by midnight not being online by 12:28am is silly.)

The Ravens ~ of course ~ will win the Super Bowl this year and next.

And ~ yes ~ I am already prediction a Democrat victory in the next gubernatorial race here in Maryland. It's difficult enough for a Republican under the best of situations. The Tea Party~drenched involvement of the Republican names bandied about at present guarantee they will lose in this state.

That's just the way it is, And moderate MDGOP candidates need not apply in the primary contest.

I was referring to predicting a winner when we don't even know all the contestants will be - Brown, Gansler, Daffy Duck. Of course, Maryland's version of the Super Bowl is only one team on the field.
