Default NY Gun Control legislation passes

Cuomo adds another legislative victory to his resume:

The bill passed by the Assembly today and the Senate last night tightens restrictions on sales, bars ammunition magazines that hold more than seven rounds and closes gaps in a 2000 ban on assault weapons, which Cuomo said has “more holes than Swiss cheese.” It also gives authorities ways to seize guns owned by mentally ill people deemed to be a threat.

“This unfortunately required tragedy and loss of life to spur the political process to action,” Cuomo, a 55-year-old Democrat, said before signing the law in Albany. “This is a gun-control bill that actually exercises common sense.”

Congratulations Cuomo, another law that criminals will ignore and that will not prevent another mass killing. What a fool.

More than likely, all he's done is turn a bunch of law abiding citizens into criminals.

Cuomo’s measure also outlaws the weapon used by Lanza, according to a statement provided by Cuomo’s office. Under the existing ban, a firearm needed to have a combination of military-style characteristics such as a pistol grip and a flash suppressor to be illegal. Now, a semi-automatic rifle or pistol with detachable magazine needs to have only one of those features to be deemed illegal.
Wow. A semi-auto rifle without a pistol grip or suppressor is just as deadly.

The changes make New York the first U.S. state to require real-time background checks for ammunition, according to Cuomo’s office. The checks would alert law-enforcement officials to high-volume buyers. The measure also prohibits the sale of ammunition over the Internet.
What is defined as high-volume? Someone who buys a couple hundred rounds to take to the range?

I don't really have a problem with the magazine size restriction.

I can imagine a "War on Sugar and Tobacco" to go along with the "War on Drugs".

New York ranks 45th in gun deaths per capita, and 43rd in terms of permissiveness of gun laws.

    Gun deaths per 100,000: 5.1
Permissive gun laws: 43rd out of 50
So seems to be working for them.

I disagree on the pistol grip; there is a substantial advantage in target acquisition time with a pistol grip, particularly when coupled with a shorter stock. This makes it a much more effective weapon at short to medium range.

I thought the 7-round magazine limit was going to make things pretty interesting since it's hard/not possible to find less than a 10-round magazine for many weapons. The law states that you can have up to a 10-round magazine but you're not allowed to load more than 7 rounds in it; if you do it's a misdemeanor. I don't know what's magical about the number 7.

We've had an armed society for a few centuries yet mass shootings have only been happening with regularity in the last few decades and in conjunction with the explosion of gun laws. (20,000+) So, more guns, more gun laws yet fewer murders and a violent crime rate that is continuing to fall, yet more massacres. These are facts and they make it obvious that the phenonenon of mass shootings have zero to do with guns and everything to do with some fundamental and destructive societal changes which we must address. The "feel good" banning of certain guns or magazines will stop nothing because it is failing to look at the real problem.

December set an alltime record for gun sales. January will probably beat that. The surest way to flood the market with a lot more guns is for liberals to denigrate legal gun owners and threaten gun bans.

    Lots more sales are coming.

Or maybe it's because there, you know, 300 million guns now.

No, I just explained why that has zero to do with it. Why has violent crime been falling for 30 years while the legal ownership of guns continues to grow? According to conventional liberal wisdom more guns = more crime yet we can see that that is demonstrably false.

You're either lying or an extreme cherry picker.
