Well you can imagine anything you want. Last time I looked, NRA membership was around four million members, so fluctuations on the order of plus or minus a few hundred thousand doesn't seem terribly significant. As for gun ownership numbers what makes you believe that the numbers have "remained steady?"

Why do I believe gun ownership has remained steady? Why would people who don't own guns suddenly feel the need to arm themselves.

And exactly--the idea that NRA membership is exploding is according to the NRA, a group that would love everyone to think they are getting more popular when the opposite is true. (And you can google that one yourself).
