Default Krauthammer: 'The Things Obama Signed Today, the Executive Orders Are Useless'

Appearing on Fox News's Special Report, Krauthammer said, "The things he signed today, the executive orders are useless" (video follows with transcript and absolutely no need for additional commentary):

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: I give the President credit for sincerity on this. There’s not a lot of political advantage in this as there is in a lot of other stuff he’s pushing. He didn’t have a plan to do this. This was not what he campaigned on last year. It wasn’t on his agenda. It was I think a genuine response to the massacre in Newtown which I think moved him. The problem is he doesn’t know what to do, and no one knows what to do.

The things he signed today, the executive orders are useless. It’s the appearance emotion. I think it’s sincere, he wants to do a little bit at the edges, a little research here, a little encouragement here, but everyone understands it’s not going to make any difference. So he’s saying the three big items are the ban on assault weapons, on the big magazines, and the idea of having the background checks. I think they are not going to pass, and I think he will expend some capital, but the country simply isn’t ready to do anything near that.

And likely never will be. For that to work the people need to trust their government. And we know right now that is a metaphysical impossibility.

Not to mention Harry Reid may not bring it to the floor.

It's all feel good stuff. It nips at the edges but does nothing.

But the Vp and the Prez can slap each other on the back, kiss Nancy Pelosi and all say they've done something.

Chicago has almost 500 murders a year (guess they were all done with assault weapons)!
Well, at least the paper they are written on will provide some heat in the WH fireplaces!

Of course they're useless. Liberal politicians make their living and hold their power by creating the illusion that what they do solves problems, when at best they have no effect and at worst create more problems than they solve. They're able to thrive with this strategy because the voters, influenced by the media, actually believe the solution for problems is giving the government more power to regulate and intrude in our lives. Wake up, folks, the government is not your friend.

Background checks and waiting periods etc. will have no effect on the criminals who buy their guns from the trunks of cars or in back alleys. Do you really believe that a thug or psycho who needs a gun to do what they do will be stopped by these government policies? The idea that lawbreakers will be deterred by laws is just wishful thinking.

If they are useless and only affect gun laws at the margins, why do you oppose them?

I agree with the author, most of the stuff Obama proposed won't change anything...

Krautwhiner gets it right in part. I believe he is wrong in part. A majority of American people are ready to ban assault weapons, large magazines and require background checks on all gun sales. The Congress may not support the American people but there is going to be a large grass roots push to pass those things. We shall see!

The way to do that is to elect Representative who share that belief and have the laws changed by Congress (not by Executive Order) to reflect those attitudes.

However, I don't think they will happen, as the majority of Americans realize that passing "feel good" laws (that do nothing to stop the daily gun violence in the cities) are useless.

Especially since criminals, by definition, do not obey laws--new ones or old ones.
