    matt -

It's not a matter of whether or not I "like" hearing news from Germany, it's a matter of exactly how relevant news from Germany actually is.

I mean, seriously. Germany and Japan have each suffered deep psychological damage as a result of having their arses handed to them on a plate half a century ago.

    They're nuts.

This seems like something the Germans need to deal with. I'm sure they can do just that without any help from me. If I don't stick my nose in their business them maybe they won't feel compelled to stick their nose in mine.

    Gopher--

Screw the misunderstanding. Why the hell are doctors even consulting with religious figures regarding medical procedures?

Yeah. They might as well get a circus clown's opinion too if they are going that route.

Sorry Matt. You have me at a disadvantage. I don’t read German and the items you posted don’t have enough information for us to have an intelligent discussion. Too much missing from the story.

    Silence, Gopher.

Since you can't understand Old High German you're obviously a white doofus moron who has no standing to comment here.

Now go stand in front of that pock-marked brick wall and await your fate.

I do try to provide translations within the paragraph limit, and my first post cited an English language source. Not fully understanding the situation is different from not telling the Germans what to do.

Of course, a lot of news stories have gaps. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me and I'll see if I have an answer.

The stuff I post is in Standard High German. A lot of whites don't know German, nor do plenty of non-whites. I don't condemn people for not knowing the language.

    Thanks. I have a few.

The doctor alleges that two hospitals refused to treat the woman. Was the alleged rape victim examined at any other hospital or by any other doctor in order to determine if she had been raped? Was she actually a victim of sexual assault?

The doctor claims that “I immediately suspected that this young woman might have been drugged with a date-rape drug, so that rape was not to be ruled out." Other sources that I could actually read suggest that the alleged victim came to the hospital and made the claim about possibly being given a date-rape drug and then sexually assaulted. Who originally made that statement? The doctor or the victim?

Is there any evidence to confirm that the victim was given a date-rape drug?

The doctor quoted in the article claims that she contacted the police. Did the police follow-up and investigate? Did they make any sort of public statement?

The alleged victim’s mother accompanied her to the hospital. Has she given a statement about the events described in the article? I’m sure she has an opinion.

The doctor quoted in the article claims to have spoken with someone at the hospital and that person denied the treatment. Has that person come forward, been identified and given a statement as to the circumstances surrounding the events described in the article?

The doctor quoted in the article claims that another doctor she knows had the same experience with the same victim at a different hospital associated with this particular Church. Has that doctor come forward, been identified and given a statement to verify those claims?

Has anyone other than the doctor quoted in the article stepped forward and attached his/her name to these allegations?

Is there any evidence to suggest that this is a widespread practice by the hospitals associated with this Church? If it is then it shouldn’t be too difficult to demonstrate that it was more than just an isolated incident caused by a simple misunderstanding. It seems to me that others would be more than willing to step forward and give details about their experiences.

BTW, is it just me or did the title of the article you originally posted change overnight? The hospital is now claiming that the victim refused treatment? Hopefully they have some sort of evidence to substantiate that claim. If that’s true then it certainly would call into question the doctor's version of the events. I would like to know if there are any records that indicate the alleged victim actually visited the second hospital or any other medical professional in search of treatment.

    Gopher--

I didn't see where the hospital claimed she refused treatment, only that she was refused treatment by the hospital.

I think right now we only have the word of this one doctor. The police are only saying "We know this woman and this case."

I didn't notice any change in the article. One title comes up in the URL and tab, which is different from the headline title.

There was a case when a tester came to one of the hospitals run by the Cellites claiming of having unprotected sex and asking for a morning-after pill, which was given to her, causing somewhat of a scandal.

I can't seem to find any substantiating claims by other persons. She was treated and underwent a forensic examination at a different, non-Catholic hospital, but I'm not aware of any results that have been reported. Germany has quite strict privacy laws, and news sources often don't report the full names of victims and suspects in criminal cases.

    The title of the article:

Catholic Hospitals in Cologne: Rape Victim Reportedly Refused Exam
Who is making that claim? I suspected it was the hospital given the title of the article and the url.

    Gopher--

If you read the subheadline under the picture,
A 25-year-old possible rape victim was reportedly refused a basic exam at two Catholic hospitals in Cologne last month.
you'll see it's in the passive voice, with the auxiliary verb left out of the headline.

It's a fairly common practice. In today's Sun I see the headline "Baltimore City officer arrested in Towson." He was arrested by Baltimore County police; the city officer did not arrest.

Gopher--While you were posting, I added an example from today's paper with a similar lack of an auxiliary verb in a headline. It can be confusing if one reads the headline literally.

Matt - You recently suggested to a poster that in her thread topic she include the location(s) of the story. Just saying.

    Oops! You're right. Cologne, Germany.

    Mea culpa.

The Catholic Church needs to keep its nose out of medicine, kind of like how Republicans need to keep their noses out of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

I looked and they seem to translate their news into english for us. I somewhat understand your reason for posting the german, but we aren't seriously going to read the german, right?

I was responding to Tunguska's assertion that Gopher was a "doofus white guy" for not knowing "Old High German."
