Ejected in both games of a doubleheader 3 times, I think. That's pretty awesome.

My favorite story is the one where he and George Bamberger stopped at a diner to get a bite. When they walked in they saw the cook coming out of the men's room and noticed he didn't wash his hands. They ordered burgers and the cook asked how they wanted them done? Earl said "cook the piss out of 'em".

Who cares if it's true...it's a great story.

Really was hard to believe that he lived in such a unassuming home, across the street and down 3 house from my Grandmother. In the summer time you could see his large veg. garden in the back yard......

    RIP Skipper!

While watching basketball tonight at my favorite adult beverage spot (BW3's) I realized that it was not "boot camp" leave when I went to visit my Grandmothers in 1966, but the leave I got just before my unit went to Vietnam... sorry about the date confusion.... It isn't easy getting "old" ;-)
Are you sure it was 1966? Weaver was managing the Rochester Red Wings then.

He got more out of players than anyone could imagine.

I remember a story of Pat Kelly, a part-time, rather religious player passing through the O's after spending most of his career in Chicago.

If memory serves me...after, a particularly difficult at bat, Earl commented to Kelly about his approach??? and Kelly nonchalantly replied that " you just have to have faith and walk with the Lord."

To which Earl replied " I'd rather see you walk with the bases loaded".
    He was all baseball!

Strongly recommend Weaver's book "It's What You Learn After You Know it All That Counts", a wonderful read about a fascinating, likable, and great-hearted man who seemed to sincerely love people behind his gruff and profane exterior.

Since Weaver's retirement, have you noticed how the Orioles new manager hires have been for the most part organizational men, or men with their first managing jobs? (Ripken Sr., R. Miller, P. Regan, Mazzilli, Perlozzo, Trembley). To it seems like the Orioles have been trying ever since Weaver to strike gold in the same manner.

No, it was 1968... boot camp leave was in 66, than leave in Jun - 68 before deployment.

Sorry I didn't adjust the date in the late edit.....
