Talking Will African Americans Begin Renouncing Their Slave Names En Masse. . .

. . . now that Obama has been reelected?

An African name was not a bar to a two term Preisdency for the Big O. Will this result in more AAs renouncing their slave names and embracing their African heritage by adopting African names?

Rose is a rose is a rose. Seems like a lot of fuss especially when real names are lost forever.

    kandace---

I just asked two 22-year black people (a married couple), and they have no idea why you were asking such a bizarre question. The wife said she was never a slave, and she is happy with her name. It's irrelevant to the husband; he's his own person, and nobody owns him.

Those answers were obtuse. AAs have non African names as a result of slavery. Denialism will not change that.

Most black Americans have no clue what area of Africa their ancestors are from, much less the actual country , tribe or name. Right or wrong we're not Africans, we're Americans

    Kandace--

I can't repeat what the husband said, other than he was wondering if you're lonely and don't have anything else to do with your time.

kandace you are a hopeless racist. I'm sure Dr. King would be proud.

Oh, oh, Windman. Now you have the husband riled up. He's ready to team up with kandace to go after you. He didn't know why you had to bring up Dr. King sarcastically.

Baltimatt, I find it very amusing that whenever an AA female expresses a Black Nationalist position, she is deemed to be "lonely." Black Nationalist men are not accused of being lonely, just angry. With Black women however, they are deemed angry and lonely which is code for "she needs a man" to "calm her down." How amusing. I am most definitely not lonely, as hubby is very good company. If anything, I am a moderating influence on hubby, as he is far more militant than I am. [It's possible.]

They're not denying anything. But they don't want to deny what has happened over the last several centuries that give them the names they have today.

I did tell him you had a husband, whom you have mentioned on this board.

    kandace--

The wife wonders if you have changed your name. The husband says he has more important things to do than worry about changing his name. Is changing his name going to get him a house, a car, a better job? He's got a wife and a newborn, and that's what he cares about.

I have not changed my name because my husband has not changed his name. If I were single I would have changed my name. As for the gentleman you are conversing with, tell him that the name change is intended to provide a pycho-cultural boost, not an economic one. However, I understand that someone just starting out like hiom would find such a jarring change off-putting. Hopefully in the future when he is more established he might consider it.

You want to change your name or not, no never mind to me. Do you find it at all contradictory that you readily adopted your husband's surname? True not a name forced on you by virtue of being a slave, but the practice is rooted in the times when wives were chattel.

It sounds pretty hypocritical to me

Pretty sure K is suggesting the variable re her and her husband is her gender. She's not suggesting "only black nationalist women" get the lonely label at all.

It's not just an AA female thing, women of whatever race are treated that way. Women who refuse to tolerate nonsense are deemed to require masculine "control."

What nonsense. I do wish that AA females would have more traditional names, I so sick of shaniqua and the like. I even heard tell of someone who named their kid Clorox.
