Thumbs up Chinese Bloggers Fascinated By Obama Oath on Bible

Obama’s inauguration was a top trending discussion topic on Sina Weibo, China’s massive microblogging site, with over 25 million posts. Of these, one comment by a Weibo user by the name Wugou1975 was forwarded over 2,000 times, garnering over 500 comments. The blogger posted a photo of Obama taking the presidential oath with Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.

In response to Wugou’s post, another Sina Weibo user asked, ”If Chinese officials were to swear an oath of office, what would they swear on?” Another harkened back to the Enlightenment and the idea of natural human rights, asking, “This natural law that [John] Locke spoke of—is this just God’s law?” One blogger linked human rights and rule of law with Christianity, writing, ”This picture embodies the most important traits of protestant Christianity: the power of the divine, the law, humans, and citizens.”

One lawyer who describes himself as Christian in his profile wrote, “I believe China will someday have a day like this. China’s head of state will stand in a constitutional court, in front of a court justice, with their hand on a Bible.”

And someday the US won't. Read an article yesterday where the author was crying about the Bible and Obama's reference to God.

Would Romney have sworn on the Book of Mormon, given that it holds more significance to his faith? Personally, I'd love to have a Muslim president swear on a Koran, for no other reason than to give some posters on here a heart attack

    Bmoreteacher--

When Congressman Keith Ellison chose be sworn in on a Koran, columnist Dennis Prager went bananas.

Can you believe the idiocy in this column?

Keith Ellison, D-Minn., the first Muslim elected to the United States Congress, has announced that he will not take his oath of office on the Bible, but on the bible of Islam, the Koran.

He should not be allowed to do so -- not because of any American hostility to the Koran, but because the act undermines American civilization.

First, it is an act of hubris that perfectly exemplifies multiculturalist activism -- my culture trumps America's culture. What Ellison and his Muslim and leftist supporters are saying is that it is of no consequence what America holds as its holiest book; all that matters is what any individual holds to be his holiest book.

Unreal...apparently Christianity trumps other religions? Apparently this columnist doesn't understand First Amendment rights. Personally, the Bible would hold no more meaning to me than if I had to swear on a copy of The Hunger Games.

As far as I know, Prager is Jewish but has no problem with Jews swearing on Bibles containing the New Testament, i.e., stuff they don't believe.

Swearing on a Bible is custom, not a requirement, anyway.

Isn't American civilization based on the premise of freedom of religion, among other things?

I think that shows a lack of intellect on his part. The whole idea behind swearing on "the Holy Book" was that you wouldn't dare go back on your word because you'd be risking damnation. What meaning does that hold to someone who doesn't believe what's in the Bible (or the New Testament, at least?) Its a custom from a time when Christianity had a stronghold on America. I see no reason to continue doing it unless a politician wants to. Unfortunately, if they didn't, American Christian conservatives would be up in arms!

Prager must not have ever read the First Amendment.

(side note - Ellison is my daughter's Congressman...I don't know if she voted for him or not, but probably)

Wasn't Barack Hussein given a choice? Perhaps if Spielberg did an award winning movie on Mohammed the prophet, instead of Lincoln, he may have made a different selection.

He wants god almighty to forgive him for using drones to blow up entire villages full of women and children in the AfPak region. He wants god almighty to forgive him for unconstitutionally prosecuting someone for smoking a joint in California and Colorado.
