All Public Transportation security is a joke. They're like janitors. They come in and clean up a mess after it's done. The purpose of security is to make an environment, oh gee, I don't know, secure? And you don't do that by being reactive instead of proactive. I take both the Metro and Light Rail. Occasionally, very occasionally, I will see security on the light rail. At the Metro, I see the guys on security detail making sure they say "Hi" to all the good-looking women who come through the station. Put security people in plainclothes on transportation at various times of the day. The word will get around that the person 3 seats behind you might be an armed MTA security officer. I would start on the Metro around 3:30PM and bust the little brats who can't seem to talk without using profanity and the n-word.
I feel safe on the DC metro. I've never been on the Baltimore one. Not sure which one you are referring to though...
If you're flashing an i phone or i pad on or near the Metro you're not as safe as you think.
There's an ongoing problem of DC metro passengers being robbed of their i toys.

iPhone, iPad stolen from Metro passengers at Capitol South station
By Peter Hermann
A group of four young men or teenagers robbed two people waiting for a train Thursday at the Capitol South Metro station in Capitol Hill, according to a spokeswoman for the transit system.
The incident, described as a snatch and grab robbery, occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on the station platform, located at First Street Southeast, between C and D streets.
Metro spokeswoman Caroline Lukas said that one victim had an iPad stolen, the other an iPhone. She said they occurred “one right after the other,” and that a third person who tried to intervene was assaulted....
Because the story is not complete. We don't know who shot him or why. We do nt know why the "victim" was out of jail or early or what kind of place he was serving out his sentence in. Was the location picked because of access to MTA?
Does a light rail stop increase the probability that halfway houses are in your neighborhood?
They need to make all of the light rail stops "gun free zones"
Then, this will never happen again
