Default City police add new bureau

" Baltimore police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts announced Friday the creation of a new unit to oversee internal affairs, audits and the writing of police procedures, a move he hopes will strengthen public confidence in his agency.* "

Translation into English: "We are going to run Honest Officers into the ground on every petty offense we can find, while pretty much ignoring the most obvious violations."

At a time when Patrol Officers can barely make ends meet, and have to risk their very lives on outdated equipment, the City is going to pay this new Deputy Commissioner $130,000 a year?

Oh, when did it become HIS Agency?

I have long thought that the IAD department of all police departments should be under the direction of the State Prosecutors Office. Especially when you consider that the prosecution of police officers can get highly political. But I'm interested in seeing what Commissioner Batts can accomplish with this. I still have some questions. Will the Inspector General have the autonomy that is traditional to that kind of office? What good is any of this if you have a Prosecutor that will not move on their charges?

So he's DC of Admin? That's nice.

I've got a cool $5 that says he will meet his end being curled up on the floor with a good bottle of rum in one hand and a copy of the Matrix in another crying, "Why, Why!", before shooting himself in the head to stop the misery of having viewed C-2.

    Morning Wizard,

Hey, I agree that the Police need HONEST oversight. It keeps the Officers on the 'straight and narrow path' and it reminds the Citizens that there are honest Officers out there.

That being said, I do not think another overpaid Deputy is going to do anything to hunt down dishonest Officers. More likely, he will be quick to overlook actual corruption while hunting down honest Officers at every turn.

And a good morning to you too Lawman,

You base these assumptions on what? I'm all for letting the guy stand on his own merits. In fact this tendency to judge the personage instead of the persons actions is one thing he will have to deal with to keep the officers on the straight and narrow. Judgement of personage or knowing his type is everything street justice is made of. American Justice is based on putting people on trial for their actions. Never their personage. That's no better than conducting Witch Trials.

    Your point is well taken.

I am not basing my assumptions on this gentleman, his skills and abilities are pretty much an unknown. I am basing my knowledge of the IAD of the BPD and their intense uselessness.

---One time they set up an incredibly STUPID sting and nearly got an IAD detective's head blown off because he didn't know what the General Orders are. (In that instance, they almost injuried several other Officers because of their own excitement at being 'super secret undercover Officers').

    Therein lies the rub...

IAD Detectives live in constant fear of being sent back to Patrol: back to rotating shift work; back to having days off canceled at a supervisor's whim; back to running call to call to call...

To avoid that they have to 'look busy' and that means trashing as many Officers as they can to justify their 9-5, weekends off, cushy desk jobs.

I don't think Commissioner Batts is bringing this guy on to head up a new department because he wants business as usual. That's a hell of a lot of trouble to go to just to preserve the status quo. Is that the green eyed monster I see lurking in that disdain?
