Default "Special needs children need to be special somewhere else."

Such a lack of intolerance. I applaud the waiter.

The chatter apparently displeased a nearby customer, who, according to NBC affiliate KPRC-TV, said, "Special needs children need to be special somewhere else."

Once Garcia heard the man's comment, "My personal feelings took over, and I told him, 'I'm not going to be able to serve you, Sir,' " he told the news channel. "[I said], 'How could you say that? How could you say that about a beautiful 5-year-old angel?' "

Castillo, "impressed" with Garcia's actions, says the waiter "put [his] job on the line … to stand up for somebody else."

I applaud both the waiter and his employer for not firing him. I can think of many places where his judgement would have been quickly rewarded with a boot to the curb (and no unemployment due to termination for cause).

if you recall mom, the kids in restaurants thread was one of the longer, most heated ones back in the day when this place was jumping .....

point is, its not limited to special needs kids, not everyone likes to spend their nights out in close proximity to someone else's kids if they aren't behaving ......

I understand and I do remember those heated topics on children.

Too bad the article didn't identify the loathsome bag of dog manure that made the comment.

The guys' comments were rude without a doubt. Why did all of the waiters stop by the table to chat though? Did they not create the environment for this child to experience an unnecessary comment? It's not very clear from the article.

Hold on a sec. So the comment about the noisy child was made in a low voice that only the waiter heard? And for that the person was essentially kicked out of the restaurant?

What if the noisy child hadn't been mentally disabled? Would the waiter have still refused to serve the customer for making a disparaging comment in a low voice?

I recall going to a choir concert a few years back and sitting near a family who brought their mentally disabled son who was making distracting noises pretty much continuously. I commented to my wife about how inappropriate it was to bring the kid, but that was it. If my remark had been overheard by others, should I have been kicked out of the concert?

I see this as political correctness taken to an extreme. The waiter should just do his job and serve customers, even if he doesn't like them, so long as they aren't disturbing other customers

Sorry but the waiter does not deserve this praise.

The child was not misbehaving according to the article. Apparently, the child was a regular in the restaurant.

From the article it appears the person making the comment was not all the quiet.

Having a son with special needs I would not have been at the restaurant when he was 5 because he was uncontrollable.

Sometimes customers are asked to leave establishments for a variety of reasons. I do not see this as political correctness. Given the article's description I see it as a rude customer not liking children with special needs.

Like I said... if the comment had been made about the chatter of a non-disabled child, should the offending customer still have been kicked out?

When my kids were that young, we typically only took them to restaurants with a high level of ambient noise - e.g. TGI Friday.

Why were Regular guy's comments deleted, mom?

He responded to you, in a very civil and fair response. Those comments of his have now been deleted. Why?

I had mis-read a fact in the article, so I deleted the post that focused on that point and re-posted my comment.

You should offer yourself as moderator since you seem to take such a lively interest in that activity. The upside, too, should you succeed, would be that we no longer have to put up with your incessant whining about it.

The bigger question for me is why did a customer feel the need to be so rude?

Because he was being disturbed by a child's chatter in a restaurant. Not everyone wants to listen to 5-year-olds talking in loud voices while they're trying to eat. (From the article: "Was he loud? Maybe a little in the moment")

The chatter that was encouraged by the employees at the restaurant. Perhaps the customer not wanting the chatter should have asked the waiters to stop talking to Milo.
