Default Mississippi Abortion Clinic Gets License Warning

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant, who signed the 2012 law, has said repeatedly that he wants Mississippi to be abortion-free and that he'd shut the clinic if he had the power to do it.

Health Department workers inspected the facility Jan. 16 to see if it had complied with a 2012 state law that requires anyone doing abortions at the clinic to be an OB-GYN with hospital admitting privileges. Derzis said local hospitals would not issue privileges to out-of-state physicians who do most of the abortions at the clinic.

Admitting privileges can be difficult to obtain. Some hospitals won't issue them to out-of-state physicians, while hospitals that are affiliated with religious groups might not want to associate with anyone who does elective abortions.

In 2011, predominantly Republican lawmakers in 24 states enacted 92 provisions that either restrict women's access to abortion services or hamper the clinics that serve women. The Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health research firm, says that's a record number of restrictive provisions — triple the previous record set in 2005. It's no accident that the old record has now been surpassed; Republicans scored major gains in the 2010 midterm elections, capturing a slew of state legislative chambers, thus providing them with fresh opportunities to impose conservative morality via government fiat. Guttmacher says that in 2012, another 43 restrictions were enacted in 19 states.

Default McDonnell quietly certifies revised abortion clinic regulations

Under the two-year compliance period stipulated by the Department of Health, Virginia’s 20 existing abortion clinics will have until the latter half of 2014 to comply with the new regulations, which will require most of the facilities to undergo costly infrastructure changes to hallways, doorways and parking areas. Advocates say a number of the clinics could be forced to close.
The health commissioner has the authority to grant a variance to the clinics if the commissioner believes the requirements place an undue burden on a facility and determines that noncompliance in a specific area would not jeopardize patient safety and public health.
McDonnell has yet to name a replacement for Health Commissioner Karen Remley, who resigned in October. She said the development, enforcement and interpretation of the regulations outside of her office had compromised her ability to fulfill her duties.

Doesn’t seem all that complicated. If abortion mills comply with the law then they can stay open. If they don’t then mothers who choose to murder their babies will have to find a licensed facility willing to serve as an accomplice to murder that is in compliance. Problem solved.

They have to make sure that only rich, privileged women can get abortions.
