Despite claims to the contrary, I have found no evidence that there are any type of official background checks on Presidential candidates. I'm not suggesting a conspiracy but merely seeking the truth. Can anyone provide a citation or reference establishing the certainty that background checks are conducted?

Yes it is a very big one called the campaign and election. We all got a say! Beside one is not mandated by the Constitution!

So there is no official background check, none is mandated by the Constitution, and the implicit assumption is that the candidates are truthful, untruths will come out in the campaign and the voters will get it right?

yes the 538 electors will get it right. Being that the office this person was elected too is the classifying authority I see no issue.
