Should Maryland register people to vote when applying for gun permits?

I am a believer in removing barriers to voting. Maryland complies with the Federal Motor Voter Program and encourages drivers to register to vote.

Wouldn't it also be great to encourage people registering guns to also register to vote?

What is "Motor Voter?"

Federal law requires the MVA to provide its customers the opportunity to apply to register to vote, or update voting information, during a driver's license or photo identification (ID) card transaction.

New Process (effective 2-21-12): Prior to your driver’s license or identification card transaction you will be given an "Applying to Register to Vote at MVA" flyer at the information counter. This flyer will instruct you on what to expect during the motor voter transaction. MVA customers will then answer the voter application questions through a computerized touch screen and their driver’s licenses or identification card signatures will be used to certify the application for voter registration. This information is then transmitted electronically to the State Board of Elections on a nightly basis. This process is paperless.

Licenses and permits allow you to engage in those activities and are already a form of registration. I don't have to register each fishing rod - why should I be required to register a gun?

You can buy a fishing license at Walmart. Is it really necessary to make voter registration easier than it is now? If its so difficult to register, then how will they get to the polls? Some things are fine the way they are.

We will soon have same day registration. But you can rat assured that they don't put early voting in GOP areas and they won't go out of their way to register sportsmen.
The gun dealers really should take it upon themselves to get voter registration information and offer to mail the documents in as people buy guns.

Too many gun owners were too busy to show up and vote last election. But it really didn't matter since Obama promised not to go after firearms!

Every gun owner needs a stack of voter registration forms. Every gun store needs them. Every supporter of gun rights better make certain not to get out hustled next election day.
