Default Public schools start Aug 18 this year will this level the practice field

This should take away the so called advantage of privates when it comes to early practice, will we see different results?

GA is right. The start of practice has nothing to do with it. The difference between the publics and privates come down to one thing.......LEVEL OF TALENT.

Wouldn't this be true for the most part between any opponents? That is, it comes down to Level of Talent regardless of whether the contest is between private and public, private and private, or public and public? Some privates have better talents than public BUT there are publics with better talents than privates. I just don't see Spalding or Loyola beating Middletown, River Hill, Dunbar, Wise, Patuxent, Douglass, Gwynn Park, Huntingtown. and many other publics last season and they were the third and fourth best of the MIAA-A. On the same hand, I don't see anyone beating Gilman or Good Counsel BUT Wise, Middletown, or River Hill would be competitive against DeMatha and Calvert Hall to me.

For the record Middletown has had a great 2 year run and a good 3/4 years. They would get killed by CHC and Dematha with a running clock. The best of the 2As or the 1as do not have the talent, Sure they will have 3or 4 players that could play on most teams, even become stars. Its about depth,These groups as a whole lacks the ability. With that said I feel (Fascineli)sp Could be the top lineman in the state as well as the East Coast next year.

I agree. Middletown has had two great years and a good 3/4 years, But isn't that how it is in football except for the truly prolific sustained recruiters like DeMatha and Gilman. After all, Calvert Hall is having a good 3/4 years but before Davis, they were quite mediocre at best from what I recall. I wonder what's Calvert Hall's record over the last ten years. My guess is that they will be not much better than .500 and certainly not better than .800. Am I wrong?

I've seen Gilman, Calvert Hall, DeMatha, and Good Counsel play with all that supposed depth and they play their better players both ways. It's not like when I watched Gilman with all their supposed depth play Moeller last year where the entire Moeller starting defense met while the offense was on the field and vice versa. That's real depth and not just numbers disguised as depth.

can't speak for anyone else, but DM plays very few kids both ways...this past yr alone, they had maybe 3-4 kids who at times played both ways...even those kids (other than 1 OL/DL) didn't play fulltime on both sides...just some possestions here and there..as stated earlier, i do think the difference is in quality depth..especially along both lines

When I talk about depth i am talking about How many Elite players a team has. I feel most publics have 3-4 elite players, most privates have 7-10 In a sport where 1 player can make a big difference,3-4 is a big advantage. As far as the privates go I have seen many kids leave schools like GC and Dematha and end up 1st team all State at a public or another private. You have to have the right fit to be successful. It may be the Coach, It may be bad luck having a superstar play your position, or many other reasons. When you look at Middletown they have a great youth league a very good feeder program and are a very long distance from any decent private school. Therefore they do not lose any of their home town talent. On the other hand teams like Urbana, Damascus, and River Hill have lost a Large amount of Elite players over the last 5 years. Probably cost the teams at least 2 championships. I agree most High schools put together 2-3 good years together. Privates are different, If they have (financial Aid) LOL they can be good teams for a long time.

Like I have been saying for years. It is apples and oranges between the public and privates. Publics can compete some years but on a year in and year out basis it is not even close. Idont know why people try to compare them. Publics have no reason to play the good privates (playoff points) and good privates dont want to play publics (CHC-Dunbar) It does not benefit either side.

Again guys, you seem to be talking about all or most privates are Gilman and Good Counsel with talks of "depth" being 7 - 8 elite players. There is no way that MIAA-A league Spalding, Mount Saint Joe, McDonogh, and Loyola have 7 - 8 elite players combined let alone on each team and I need no go into the B and C leagues. The same applies to Carroll, St Johns, McNamara, and O'Connell of the WCAC. It's drinking the kool-aid to think most privates have 7 - 8 elite players. I know many like to point to the CHC-Dunbar game last season as the example of the dominance of the privates but didn't Douglass with a freshman QB soundly take out Spalding at Spalding that same weekend the private chanters don't care to mention! In restating my position, after Gilman and Calvert Hall, the top publics would be very competitive against the MIAA. After Good Counsel and DeMatha, and Gonzaga of the WCAC, the top publics would be very competitive. In other words, the privates are just not the same top to bottom where the better publics just don't have a chance.

Oh, and I just looked up the great Calvert Hall's record over the last ten years:

    2012 -- 9-3
    2011 -- 10-2
    2010 -- 11-1
    2009 -- 8-4
    2008 -- 4-7
    2007 -- 5-6
    2006 -- 1-8
    2005 -- 5-5
    2004 -- 3-8
    2003 -- 4-6

This sure looks like that good 3-4 years BigSky talked about but directed it to Middletown when I said that's the nature of football except for the Gilmans and DeMathas.

Not sur what you are Thinking. First, what I said is CHC/ Dematha the last 3 years would put a running clock on Middletown. Next as long as (ANY private school puts up the Money to recruit they will be better than publics Most of the time, Frankly I do not believe CHC has ever been a power house even when they were Number 1 in the State. They were not the most talented,They were not very fast, they played 3/4 games that could of gone either way. They should not be considered in an elite private Football school(Maybe Elite Lacrosse/Baseball) The recruiting Budget is not there, and maybe never going to be there. What I can say about the past before 3/4 years ago is nothing. I do not know or care. I can Say That Coach Davis and his Staff has done more with Less. I call that good Coaching. Middletown I believe has been a Very Dominant Division 2 Team, In the last 2 years. They split with Urbana, Urbana has lost more than a Handful of games in that same time.Dunbar has been a very Dominant 1A team for the last 6 years, They had twice as many D1 recruits than CHC and were embarrassed last year by a rebuilding CHC team. If I was going to talk about Great privates over the last 5 years I would talk about GC and Gilman, If I was going to Talk about Great Publics I would Talk about River Hill. 1 or 2 Good/Great years do not get you in the conversation, Frankly 5 years is Borderline.

Elit Players to me are All State/All Metro 1st 2nd teams. If you do not think Bishop McNamara has 7 elite players, Get out and watch them.Loyola,Mt Saint Joe, better than you think. Spalding last year was down after losing most of there starters and a legend in a Coach that passed. By the end of the year they were a decent team.

McNamara has a lot of talent. Their issue was coaching. Lets see what the new coach does. MSJ is really young but they have elite talent. Watch out for them in 2 years. McDonogh definitely has elite talent. I saw on a new recruiting site that Wyatt Cook from McDonogh was ranked as the #1 ILB in the country for the Class of 2015. Jared Cohen might be the best OL in the state. They have speed to burn. They would have killed any public school by the end of the year. They have Gilman all they could handle in the playoffs.

I wish I had a buck for every time one of you guys say some team would "kill" another team or a buck and two bits for every time one of you would say someone would put a "running clock" on another. BigSky says CHC would have put a running clock on Middletown any time within the last three years. However, I can only recall CHC putting a running clock on HdG and MD Christian within the last three years let alone do it to a team of the caliber of Middletown who is a back-to-back state champion coming off of a title appearance.

DayWalker, that is why it is tough making assumptions about teams you do not see play. Greyhound,Guro,Big Country,Watson,Meth,Harcorn,85 Knight etc and many others on his board actually see a ton of games. I have personally either seen or Officiated Middletown 20+ times in the last 4 years,(The best Crab Cakes and Crab soup in the state at home games) If you followed Calvert Hall the few games they play against public schools a majority of the times the starters do not start they may play a quarter somewhere late second Q and early 3rd Q,They get the least playing time on the team for those games. If it is a game where a blowout is going to occur he will pull his starters as well, Coach feels that football is a team sport and the non starters deserve the honor in showing what they can do against a fresh team and a team that is at their best. It was selfishly hard for me to agree with it when my kid was benched, but easy to see when he left. LOL Coach Davis never tries to embarrass the other teams coaches and players.

Damn, just when I was onboard with just a little bit, very little, of what you said, you go and ruin that by citing fibbin' BigCountry as a learned astute knowledgable observer of high school football games. Now you have me doubting your claim of personally either seen or officiated anything let alone Middletown 20+ times in the last 4 years. Tell me BigSky, were you at the Damascus - QO games last season with BigCountry at the same time both of you were on this board jawing it up with GA but told details of what you observed at the game? Tell us something BigSky. Inquiring minds want to know!

No,Although I live 5 miles from Damascus High I have never been to a Damascus Home game. Regarding Middletown, anyone that knows me will confirm the years I was a official and anyone that knows Middletown will confirm the Crab cakes and Crab Soup, or the fact when kids lit the new turf on fire GC gave them leftover turf to patch field. Sad that you continue to be wrong and spread Ill will. Please show me where I spoke about seeing Damascus and Qo. I can confirm the crab cakes and crab soup are excellent. Students from Brunswick set turf on fire a few weeks after it was installed. Field was patched with excess from initial install. As far as Middletown's talent, I would agree that we certainly do not have the level of talent that private schools can acquire. What we do have is a group of coaches at our youth level (MVAA) who are committed to teaching fundamentals, commitment and both O and D mirror HS program. When these kids enter high school, they have been exposed to the basics of the HS program for 5-6 years. Everything in the youth program is geared to prepping kids for HS program. I realize this happens at a lot of other high schools, I can only speak of the success our high school team has realized because of it. Yes we have had a nice run for the last 4 years, but I expect this years team to do very well and for years to come. BTW......Falcinelli is correct spelling.
