There was no reason for it to be a penalty.
Plus the ball was overthrown.
The more times I see that play at regular speed, the less of a penalty I think it is. At regular speed, Smith "grips" the jersey for a tiny fraction of a second. As we all know, Crabtree runs straight in to him, then tries to push off to flex out for the fade. There was contact both ways, which anybody rooting for the 49ers will never acknowledge.
As I noted yesterday... if you watch the replay of Joe's roll out, should have been late hit, incompletion from the 49ers one... Bowman wraps his arms around Pitta to prevent the break. That was a far more egregious hold than Smith's very brief jersey tug. And never mind the late hit, out-of-bounds, that wasn't called. Would have given the Ravens a fresh set of downs from inside the one.
This. It wasn't holding because the ball was already in the air (and the contact before that took place within the 5 yard zone where contact is allowed). And it was so far overthrown there was no reasonable way Crabtree could have caught it, nullifying defensive PI. The ONLY real penalty was OFFENSIVE PI, because you can clearly see Crabtree push Smith's helmet and force him to the ground.
Jim's really gotta learn to take it like a man.
Well, let's see, if a penalty is a penalty no matter when in the game, then each team next year should average 10-15 offensive holding calls.![]()
Maybe if he had them better prepared, they wouldn't have wandered through the first half plus four plays into the 2nd like deer in the headlights.
Yes we already know how Jim feels......
He didn't like the call then, he doesn't like it now, he won't like it in the future....
If you're going to post PFT articles at least post one with new information. For instance Jimmy Smith reflecting on the play:
“He ran directly into me,” Smith said of Crabtree in an interview on ESPN 102.3 in Denver, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. “I had inside leverage. He ran into me. So once he did that and tried to push off . . . I had to make contact. That was on him. He didn’t run a fade; he didn’t get away. He could have just ran and pivoted out or faded away from the ball, but he didn’t. He ran into me so he could make contact to push off to create separation, and I didn’t let that happen.” “He likes to run into you and then push you off,” Smith said. “I’m kind of taught to not let that happen. . . . And that’s the kind of way the game was played that day so the refs just let it play out that way.”
Maybe someone ought to ask Jim how he feels about the non-call at the :17 of the first quarter....Smith was clearly interfered with and nothing was called..as Simms pointed out, the grab and contact prevented a TD..Ravens punted two plays later...
Yet we all know John was the black sheep of the family.
Exactly. In every game I've ever seen there are at least a few questionable calls and/or ones that could have arguably gone either way---- if you're gonna whine and complain about any of them, its not really legitamate to try to make a point unless you talk about all of them, as any one would have had the potential to change the game.
Furthermore, the fans whining about Cary not being ejected are too stupid to realize that they're diminishing their team. What does it say when you're begging an official to throw out an opposing starting player? It means you believe your team wasn't good enough to compete and needs a little handicap
The Cary thing is different. Contacting a ref is an automatic ejection. There really isn't any judgment involved at all; except in this case where the ref judged/chose to not implement an automatic rule. In all the other cases, however, there's at least some judgment involved. And what everyone wants is for the calls to be balanced for each side. In the Super Bowl, I'd say that was pretty much the case -- the calls were equally bad for both sides. THAT'S why, for a head coach to keep whining about one particular call, especially when the call in question was arguably the BEST call (in the form of a non-all) of the entire game, is just plain pitiable. Jim Harbaugh is trashing his rep and he's lost total cred from everyone OTHER than San Fran fans.
There were NO Holding calls called in the entire game.
So Jim kinda got what he was asking for - the game was called the same way, regardless as to whether it was a random play 6 minutes into the 2nd quarter or in the final seconds of the game. Seem Jim wants HIS one play to be called DIFFERENTLY from the rest of the game. If no other calls during the game, both on Offense and on Defense, warranted a Holding call then certainly this play didn't warrant one either.
bad play calling
bad pass
good pass rush
both players contributed in the contact
Forty Whiner coaches, players and FANS looking to get bailed out = NOT A CHANCE
