In the early 1930s, the Boston National League Football Club was origionally named the Boston Bees, then the Boston Braves. At the beginning of the NFL's life, the football teams tried to adopt the same name as the local MLB team - Chicago Cardinals, New York Giants, etc.) if a local team existed.

When George Preston Marshall bought the franchise in 1932 and moved it to Washington, he wanted to change the name from the Braves (Boston Braves, remember?) but wanted to keep the Native American theme and the Washington "Senators" did not do so.

I read one bio of Marshall and learned that he was an avid reader of Western novels...and, if I had to guess, admired the grit and determination of the "Indians". That might be the reason he wanted to stay with the theme, but named the team "The Redskins".

Only a fan of a loser team would consider a regular season game two weeks before Christmas to be as consequential as the Super Bowl. But is it just my "inferiority complex" showing again?

Sorry to disagree, but while head-to-head matches are important (it is the number 2 criteria in determining playoff rankings), it is only one or two contests - and those that can go either way.

However, the path to the SB is 16 regular season games and up to 4 playoff games!

Furthermore, the NFL is a results league...at the end of the year, only one team possesses the Lombardi Trophy. In 2012 season, it was the Ravens.

Let's look to the future in lieu of arguing over a single game.

The 'Skins have a great young QB and other players that form the core of what might become a great NFC team! So enjoy the fact that things are looking up!

The Ravens have a great team (5 straight playoff runs, 3 times in the AFC Championship game, 1 SB) now built around Flacco and a dangerous offense (Wow, never thought I'd be saying that!); a mix of veterans and young players that have shown it can win it all and does not seem to be ready to go away any time soon.

I'd say life is good for both sets of fans!
