    Default A second state bird?

Some legislators want to make the Raven Maryland's second state bird.

Still on a high from Sunday’s Super Bowl, some Baltimore-area lawmakers have introduced legislation to make the raven an official state bird. Maryland has about two dozen other state symbols, and those already include one state bird: the Baltimore oriole, which happens to be the namesake of a certain baseball team.

    ...

Among those: a bill introduced in 2001 after the Ravens last won the Super Bowl. “We don’t need another bird,” then-delegate John S. Arnick (D-Baltimore County) said at the time, according to a press report that noted that ravens are actually relatively rare in Maryland. “No one knows it exists.”

“There’s so much that divides us in this state, and this is certainly one thing that can unite us,” said Sen. Bobby A. Zirkin (D-Baltimore County), who introduced the bird bill in the Senate on Thursday. “It makes eminent sense.”
Typical politician. Just name a new state bird and everything is going to be alright. If this is any indication of what his priorities are then Mr. Zirkin is indeed a worthless bag of dog manure and needs to immediately resign from office. He should consider renouncing his citizenship and leaving the country as well. The voters in his district should be ashamed of themselves for foisting this despicable piece of crap on the rest of us. His district would be better off with no representation than with this clown.

It would be a stupid idea, even aside from the fact that half of the state's population are Redskins fans (in the DC suburbs) and Steelers fans (in Western Maryland).

Like I said before. Do we really pay these people to represent us and come with this $(@+? Softcrab sandwich as the official state sandwich, change the name of Negro Mt even though that is a federal issue, change the state sport to duckpin bowling, Smith Island cake, the raven as a second "official" bird, change the lyrics to the state song so it doesn't offend anybody. SMH Maybe we should change the state welcome signs to "WELCOME TO MARYLAND! WE HAVE A BUNCH OF IMBECILES IN OUR STATE HOUSE"

The Orioles named the team after our state bird.

We didn't choose our state bird because it was the name of a pro sports team.

    Bad "idea."

The second state bird should be a vulture. With O'Malley's face.

Conservatives, having lost both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and yet choosing to stay in America, continue to walk around my country like they have their shoes on the wrong feet.

So far as I know, every state has designated a state bird. The U.S. has a national bird too - the bald eagle.

I don't object to a handful of state symbols (bird, flower, song), but it's starting to get ridiculous when there are multiple proposals every year for additional symbols... like having a second "state bird".

History not your strong suit. The Founding Fathers, were all conservatives who did everything they could not to break away from England until they had no other option. Same with Lincoln and the Southern States over slavery. Did everything he could to mollify them on that issue until they fired on Fort Sumpter.

It might be stupid but not for that reason. The Ravens are a Maryland team, the Washington Redskins and Pittsburgh (PA) Steelers are not. There is even a Maryland State Seal in one of the Ravens logos. As Marylanders we have only one home team. If some want to root for out of state teams that should have no bearing on the status of our one and only Maryland team.

If the Founding Fathers had been conservatives, our national anthem would be "God Save the Queen."

South Carolina seceded right after and because Lincoln was elected.

Let's look at this from a different angle.
The time they are spending deciding on another state bird is time they AREN'T spending taking our money and rights away and giving them to those who demand free handouts in exchange for voting (D) and to illegals.

I say make the orioles the state summer bird,
and make the raven the state winter bird.

the legislature are good at putting their names on do nothing bills and pork hands out but when it comes to legislating they aren't work a damn and typically pass generic BS laws that are left to the bureaucrats to interpret .....

I love the "reasonable accommodations" in the ADA that has made many a lawyer rich .....

The Redskins are based in Maryland. And it's undeniable that the overwhelming majority of football fans in Montgomery and PG (probably Southern Md too) are Redskin fans.

Their name says Washington, not any Maryland jurisdiction and they could have had a stadium in Virginia as easily as one in MD or DC where it should have been built. Like I said, it doesn't matter if some people living in MD choose to root for an out of state team it still doesn't make the Redskins a Maryland team. If anything they are a Virginia team. Practically the whole state of Virginia is Redskin territory.
