Mayor calls for residential trash pick-up fee, 10 percent cut in city work force

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake Monday proposed a series of what she called "bold reforms" to fix long-term city finances, including shifting away from a traditional pension system, charging residents for trash collection and cutting the city work force by 10 percent over time.

It's already kinda hit and miss if they decide to pick up my trash at all, depending on what sort of mood they are in that day.

What happens if you don't pay the fee?

If it means trash won't be picked up at your address, it's be knee deep in a month.

    Pepper--

I'm going to take a guess here that it will be added to the property tax bill.

High taxes are patriotic. I hope they add more fees and increase taxes. The city needs it.

Unfortunately, I foresee some residents refusing to pay fees and illegally dumping their trash.

"The mayor said she wants to require current city employees to contribute some of their salaries to their pensions, while moving to a 401(k)-style retirement plan for new civilian hires."
For some odd reason, the Sunpaper story left out the fact that, according to SRB in her speech, "Baltimore is the only state entity that does not require employees to contribute to their pensions."

Here's a tip for SRB, OWE'Malley and Obama: You want out of growing debt? STOP THE FREAKIN' SPENDING! Simple economics.

I pay a trash collection fee that is included on my property tax bill. Funny thing, I don't have public trash collection. Welcome to the reality!

If everyone in the city was allowed to drop off their trash bags at City Hall, it could save the city a big buncha $$$.

If you live in any reputable city or town, you already have a trash fee. This year in my town, we now have a recycling fee. That’s crazy! Heck, I will pay someone to pick up my trash, but now I have to separate the trash (plastic, aluminum, etc.) and then they charge me for it in a separate trash bin.

In DC, you can get fined for putting recyclables in regular trash.

Soo... you are one of the last few holdouts of those who don't recycle?

No, I do recycle but I should not be charged to separate my trash. The town charged us for an extra bin (recycle) and then added an additional fee each month to pick it up. What I guess I am trying to say is, it is still the same amount of trash but now separated for an extra fee.

I do note that Police Officers do pay (and pay alot) into their pension fund. I assume it is a different fund that she is referring to.

That could explain why the Police Officer's fund was (past tense) solvent and why the City decided that they could drop the amount they put in (thus trashing the solvency).
