Default Four Alabama players arrested on robbery charges, suspended indefinitely

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-...94--ncaaf.html

"Linebacker Tyler Hayes and defensive lineman D.J. Pettway were charged with second-degree robbery while defensive back Eddie Williams and running back Brent Calloway were charged with second-degree robbery and fraudulent use of a credit card.

According to the Tuscaloosa News, Williams and Hayes admitted to attacking a student, punching him in the head and face and kicking him in the back and rib area while he was unconscious. They stole the victim’s backpack, which had an Apple laptop in it."

Coach Nick Saban also put out a statement, saying the players have been suspended indefinitely, via AL.com:

"The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people. The University and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program."
Good for the University. All too often athletes get a pass on criminal behavior.

ESPN reports that one of the thugs was arrested two days before this incident, for carrying an illegal concealed pistol.

Looks like Saban has suspended them and they have been banned from the football facilities (most likely gone for good, we can only hope).

Ha, ha, goodbye NFL. How stupid can you be to do something like this and kill any chance of making it in the big leagues.

Since most players don't make the NFL, its even more stupid to pass up a free education.

True but players from the National Championship team would have a greater chance of making it to the NFL.

Not really. The NFL is filled with players who were arrested in college (Randy Moss, the RB for the 49ers who punched a player during a game, etc).
If his 40 year dash time is good some NFL teams will overlook the "youthful indiscretion".
At times teams have even taken players back, Lawrence Phillips beat up someone was "suspended" by reinstated for the BCS National Championship game.
There is a major difference between suspended and kicked off the team or kicked out of the college. If this was Joe Non-Jock the college would kick his butt out.
Trust me if Saban doesn't have a better player to replace any of these guys they will be back.

They were back up players so they will be gone from Alabama. But you are right there are some schools that don't care and will take them like Marshall. I think Marshall is one of those "schools" that is just a vehicle for having a football team. Academics are secondary to the football program.

But the backup freshman set to play more next season as the seniors graduate. Its not just Marshall it is a majority of division one schools. The football program often pays for the new science lab. If the football or other sports programs do well the former grads in a spirit of school pride often step up the donations.
When people see someone wearing a Duke, Syracuse, OSU, USC etc. shirt people think the sports program first and academics second.

Yes but most of those do maintain some standards. I mentioned Marshall because they took Moss after no other school would touch him.

Life is hard, but it is harder when you do stupid things. If they are guilty, Let them make a remake of the longest yard.

You think the football players at most Division One schools, are going there to get an education? That is a joke Jerry Seinfeld would be proud of!

Why are we even surprised anymore?

I would have had been more impressed if they planned some elaborate heist, cracking a a safe containing bearer bonds, with lots of planning and precision down to the minute.

Instead just plain and simple thug crime.

My guess is that if you play for the Alabama football team, even as a back up and never make it to the NFL, alumni boosters will help you find a decent job upon graduation, provided you are not a criminal.

Samuel Jurgens is the Alabama student who was allegedly beaten and robbed by members of the Crimson Tide football team. He told The Crimson White, a student newspaper, about the ordeal which included him being knocked unconscious and being covered in blood.

And even after the report, which he says was unprovoked, the sophomore still plans to root for his school's football team in the fall.

When the arrests were made this week, the Tuscaloosa News said that according to depositions filed by UA police officers, defensive lineman D.J. Pettway, defensive back Eddie Williams and linebacker Tyler Hayes punched a student in the head and face, and kicked him in the ribs. Williams and Hayes admitted to the attack, according to the Tuscaloosa News. There were two attacks, and The Crimson White said arrest records indicated Williams was the one that knocked both victims unconscious. Those players, along with running back Brent Calloway, were charged, and all of the players were suspended indefinitely by coach Nick Saban.

His friends could plainly see he had been "badly beaten" given the amount of blood on his jacket, broken headphones and face. If Jurgens' account of the attack is true, Alabama shouldn't hesitate to boot the players involved off the team permanently.

It was a short-sighted decision that got the players into this mess. Is it really smart to make the same mistake twice? Would it not be wise to take a step back, examine all the options and find a solution that would benefit both the player and the program?
It was a criminal decision, not simply short-sighted.
This is one of the stupidest articles that I have ever read. They didn't just steal some money, the inflicted bodily harm on someone that did nothing to them
