    Default What really hurt eHarmony?

    Neil Clark Warren interview

“I think this issue of same-sex marriage within the next five to 15 years will be no issue anymore. We've made too much of it. I'm tired of it. It has really damaged our company,” Warren said, “and when the attorney general of the state of New Jersey decided that we had to put up a same-sex site and we did it out of counsel that if we didn't do it we were not going to have any business in New Jersey -- we literally had to hire guards to protect our lives because the people were so hurt and angry with us, were Christian people, who feel that it's a violation to scripture.

He continued “I have said that eHarmony really ought to put up $10 million and ask other companies to put up money and do a really first class job of figuring out homosexuality. At the very best, it's been a painful way for a lot of people to have to live. But at this point, at this age, I want America to start drawing together. I want it to be more harmonious.”
OK, so New Jersey (which does not have same-sex marriage, BTW, only civil unions) said he had to put up a site for same-sex couples if he wanted to continue doing business in the state. He did, and he needed to hire armed guards to protect him from ... Christians?

So I guess it's the gays' fault for getting some Christians so riled up he needed to hire armed guards. Naughty gays!

Will this be a gay bashing or Christian bashing thread, I wonder?

I remember when they opened their business up to gay matching - it was based on the threat of a lawsuit.

This brings back some memorable posters - http://talk.baltimoresun.com/showthr...light=EHarmony

What really hurt them is that people don't care to be matched on a deeper level. They want someone who looks good.

You sound surprised, as if Christians threatening violence against queer "enablers" is some kind of surprise.

And for the haters: certainly not all Christians condone violence, but let's be honest and admit that there are a lot of violent Christians in the US who hate queers.

Throughout history I would venture to guess that more people have been killed, tortured and maimed to attempt to justify some a'hole's version of a god. What a waste of time. The real scary part is that each faction swears they are right and you are wrong.

The story really does not mention what caused his need for guards. I would bet angry emails and voicemails. It also does not specifically mention the religious background of the angry people.

I really dislike that NJ action. Why should he be forced to offer a service to gay people? He had a good business. Homosexual dating is not the same thing. The markets have little cross over. There are other gay dating sites.
I got married before the Internet dating thing was ever an issue so I don't know a lot about the subject. Seems strange to me but there are a lot of lonely people in this world.

How is "homosexual dating" not the same thing?

Here's his quote, which I posted: "We literally had to hire guards to protect our lives because the people were so hurt and angry with us, were Christian people, who feel that it's a violation to scripture."

The target markets are not the same.

The company would be forced to market to different people. The current users would not interact with gay users. Completely independent databases.

There are gay dating sites. Should they be forced to open straight dating sites?

    Not Muslims and not Jews:

we literally had to hire guards to protect our lives because the people were so hurt and angry with us, were Christian people, who feel that it's a violation to scripture.

He said he is Christian. I am sure 90% of the angry people were Christian. But we don't know that for fact.
We really don't know if he really needed armed guards. Sounds like BS to me.

As an atheist I find all religions equally silly and antiquated.
Roman Catholic, Mormon, Baptist, Krishna, Scientologist, all the same.

That was apparently his perception: the angry people were Christian.

He said that he had to employ guards to protect his life because Christians were angry.

Unless you have a mouse in your pocket, I'm not sure who "we" is.

    "We" weren't there.

The guy who was there and actually did the deed says he hired the guards to protect his life because of angry Christians.

And he's a Christian theologian so I'm gonna expect he knows 'em when he sees 'em.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a basis for your opinion?
