    Default Mayor Bloomberg's New Ban

    What will he ban next?

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has fought against smoking, big sugary drinks and salty food during his tenure, is setting his sights on a new foe: Styrofoam.

Bloomberg plans to use part of his Thursday State of the City address to push for a ban on Styrofoam food packaging. He also will call for initiatives that would increase the number of parking spaces for electric cars and begin recycling more plastics and food waste

    Moderators?

I applaud this. Styrofoam should be replaced by something that can be recycled. Hopefully others will follow this action.

Wow, a worthwhile ban. Styrofoam sucks. Had to break down a big chunk of it this morning to fit in trash bag. So many tiny little pieces got stuck to my clothing.

I hope the next mayor bans tiny tyrant billionaires from being mayor.

"One product that is virtually impossible to recycle and never bio-degrades is Styrofoam ... something that we know is environmentally destructive and that may be hazardous to our health, that is costing taxpayers money and that we can easily do without, and is something that should go the way of lead paint," Bloomberg will say, according to excerpts of the speech obtained by The Associated Press.

You're missing the point. We are sick of Bloomberg and his nanny state governing. I will drink whatever size soda I want and I will eat trans fats if I want. I don't want the government telling me what I can and can't do.

How does a mayor have this kind of authority? How is he not interfering with the Commerce Clause when he imposes these bans??

To paraphrase the thread-starter, this thread isn't about trans-fat or buckets of soda, it's about Styrofoam. Way to go Mayor Bloomberg!

Well, since he has "rooted out" all the corruption in the city government system, locked up all the criminals, cut taxes, found jobs for all that need/want them, what else can he do with his spare time?

If "we are sick of Bloomberg...", then next time he's up for re-election, then "we" should vote him out of office. Just sayin'?

In a perfect, isolationists world, things YOU do would have no consequences to the rest of us, nor to the environment (which many of us enjoy, even if you don't). Unfortunatley, that's not how the real world works. Eating poorly has medical consequences that we all, indirectly, pay for. There's no doubt that America has an obesity problem, and for whatever reason, many people can't seem to fathom the concept that it's killing them, and costing the rest of us higher medical insurance in the process. As far as Styrofoam food packaging is concerened....a landfill nightmare, with a half-life measured in centuries, not decades....not to mention that the LITTER known as Styrofoam food packaging can be found everywhere...from our beaches, parks and streets. Replace with something bio-degradable.

I have no problem with fat people eating as many big macs as their fat mouths will take, and then disposing of their Styrofoam food packaging container anyway they want...so long as I don't have to (indirectly) pay for the consequences of their fatty deposist clogging up their artteries, nor having to look at their litter.

The soda ban was stupid (and I personally hate soda). This one is debatable.

There's more than a few on this site that would love to see such a ban in place.
