I just heard Gilman is opening up against Manatee (FL) in Baltimore on labor day, to be televised on ESPN. That will be a tough game with all the new starters Gilman will be fielding, but I love the challenge.

Yes this is true! I wasn't sure it was official yet so didn't want to bring it on the board. Biff again is upping the ante. Manatee for most of the year was considered the best team in the country last year until Aquinas upset them. It's going to be a very very tough game.Originally Posted by gillytech
I think Gilman will be very good on offense if the rumors of them changing it are true. Locksley is a special athlete and player. I think Antonio Dupree will show that he's one of the best RB's in the state and in his Class nationally. Gilman is just loaded at the skill positions and will have a HUGE OL. The issue is replacing Poggi, Kiser and Norris on D. This will be the problem. They have the players to replace Dickerson(not a slight to him) at safety but will be very young and inexperience at the LB position. I'm excited for the season.

Official match-ups are out for this year's Patriot Classic on Saturday, September 7th (MD Week 1):
- Gonzaga (DC) vs. Saint Peters Prep (NJ)
- DeMatha vs. Saint Joseph Regional (NJ)
- Gilman vs. Paramus Catholic (NJ)
Games will be played at D-III Kean Universtiy in NJ, whose stadium capacity is probably in line with Hopkins.

Really bad look for CHC to have backed out of that SPP game. Kudos to Zaga for stepping up to the plate.

Kean University seats 3,000 evenly on each side with temporary bleachers in the end zones gets a 9,000 person capacity. I think it's a good look having a full stadium instead of the usual 1/4 full Navy Stadium.

I waited to comment on this until I received confirmation from multiple sources. CHC originally signed contracts with Franklin and Extra Point Productions (the good folks who put on the I-95 Kickoff & Patriot Classics) where they would play SPP in New Jersey. However, the schedules became finalized and Franklin only had one available weekend for the game. It happened to fall on the same weekend as the Patriot Classic. After much negotiating to keep both games on the Cardinals schedule, CHC's hand was pretty much forced and they had to keep the game with Franklin. CHC did not "back out" of the SPP game. The folks at the classic suggested CHC honor their local game, according to multiple sources.
Personally, I would much rather CHC play Franklin AND take the journey to NJ to play SPP and their all everything RB Hillman, win, lose or draw. Without the SPP game, CHC still has the most difficult OOC schedule in the MIAA outside of Gilman, with Good Counsel and Trinity Catholic on the slate. The folks I talked to at CHC were disappointed about the cancellation. Franklin is a good local program and this is no slight to them. However, CHC has much less to gain by playing Franklin in lieu of SPP instead of playing Franklin in addition to SPP.

Red Lion Christian in DE has cancelled their Varsity football program for 2013. They were supposed to play AACS in Week 4 and MATHS in Week 8.

Not quite true.. first off there was no football program there before him ( they didnt even have a football field at all) and would never have been one.. That man started it and funded it ... second off they still have a football program and all the stuff that man built and paid for to include training center, stadium and turf practice field etc... They are just back to square one and will play a JV schedule this year because they don't have the players to compete at a Varsity level... Its a very small school so they will always be tight on having enough players.. unless of course they offer financial aide (which they don't now) and bring in and attract players.. were talking about a school with less than 200 high school kids and more girls than boys... football programs are always a struggle for small christian schools of that size most don't even offer football.. well unless its funded by someone else.. Unless the school doubles in enrollment I don't see them sustaining a football program unless they get benefactor money... but thats no ones fault just the economics of a small private school...
The more accurate depiction is the man took HIS football program with him.. The school got to keep the gingerbread...

Is ECA going to play this year? It seems like the players are still relying on them having a season, but I have not heard of anyone scheduling them in 2013. I feel bad for those kids. Nothing is guaranteed in college. The high school experience is precious both on and off the field. I hope they work something out.

I dont know.. they keep things pretty close.. From what I have heard they have 40 some new students coming in next year (some of which already transfered) pretty sure they will have a building in Elkton and have heard there are at least 13 games on the schedule... who they may be playing I have no idea..

Yup great example for kids off all ages that play sports who we teach no one person is greater than the team.

Your missing the point the reason they did this is so they could stay together as a team.. The situation at Red Lion was these kids only came there for the ambitions of the football program and FOCAS aide afforded that to them. Had ECA not happened 90% of the team would have been broken up and the kids would have been dispersed back into their zoned public school system. Staying at Red Lion was not an option. Most could not afford it without the aide being Red Lion told the kids and families there would be no more aide and if they wanted to stay they had to pay for it and from Red Lions point of view they would not be a full DIAA member until all the FOCAS kids were gone. They had to go.. The kids and families were presented with the ECA option and they took it No one twisted there arms or put a gun to their head.. Really the easy thing for the man to do would be to cut his losses and take his kid to an established football power and let what ever happens to the rest if the kids happen.. I am not saying the man is a Saint but give some credit where credit is due.. He stayed with them and is investing even more in them..
You have to understand most of those kids never really felt like part of the school as much as part of FLASH and the football program.. The school always had a huge division about these kids even being there and the kids felt it and it got worse with all the drama so it became a us and them thing.. Creating ECA was not much of a change for them in that they are a football team and Red Lion was where they were educated now its National Connections educating them. Now they have something that is their own and a much greater sense of belonging. I know its difficult to understand unless you were there and went through it . In the end it didn't work for my kids but it does but for ones that want to sacrifice the "normal" High School experience in lieu chasing a college offer then yeah I guess it is...its a choice they make..

Plus, that's a terrible example of no one person being greater than the team - in this case, Stills was clearly greater than the Red Lion football program considering that it didn't exist before he arrived and folded as soon as he left.

The thing about the whole Red Lion saga is Sills is made out to be villain.. He is not the villain.. His kid got an offer from USC in the 7th grade .. way before anyone heard of Red Lion or the current kids that got offers.. He did not surround his kid to get that offer he brought other kids in to piggy back off of the offer.... Here is a fact the Red Lion Varsity team was playing the worst schedule in the state when that happened .. The other kids came AFTER due to the notoriety.. Sills just tried to build a program on that buzzz.. Bottom line jealousy and hate destroyed Red Lion football.. nothing less nothing more...

The Maryland teams have certainly picked three very tough Florida teams to play. Manatee is incredibly good and went to the 4th round of the playoffs last season in classification 7A and is considered one of the best teams in the nation. Godby was the state champion in classification 5A last season and is always among the best in Florida. Trinity Catholic went to the 2nd round of the playoffs last season in classification 3A and has won or been to the state championship on a few occasions. My team, Trinity Catholic, has a student body of 600 Co-Ed and the football team has a roster of 40. Calvert Hall has a student body of 1,300 all boys with a roster of 96 on their football team. However, TC played almost every game the last few seasons against public schools with student bodies of 1,000 to 3,000 and has beaten most of them.
Should be some very interesting games and I'm looking forward to coming up to Towson to watch Trinity against Calvert Hall. Calvert Hall looks as though they have a very good QB and the rest of the team doesn't look half bad. Trinity better be ready.

I think the Calvert Hall /Trinity Catholic, Gilman /Manatee & Dematha /Goodby games were originally slated for The University of Maryland's Byrd Stadium. Did that fall through?
Calvert Hall does not have a 96 player varsity roster. The Maxpreps roster listed most Calvert Hall players twice. However, the roster was slightly larger than normal because Coach Davis asked about 1/2 dozen or so seniors who were cut from the varsity team as juniors if they wanted to be a part of the 2012 team. The roster was around 50 in 2012 with the previously cut seniors.
Also, Calvert Hall's enrollment is 1,100. The days enrollment numbers do not play nearly as large of a roll in fielding a competitive private school football team in Maryland as say a decade + ago. These days it's all about the benjamins and endowments.
