Default D.C. police arrest group of female muggers

The areas around the Metro stations in NE DC have notoriously been very violent unsafe places.

Groups of girls or women carried out two robberies Friday night in the District and attempted a third, D.C. police said. Police said three teenagers were arrested.

The first robbery, involving five females, occurred about 9 p.m. near the Benning Road Metro station, police said.

Three hours later, said Officer Araz Alali, a police spokesman, five women punched and kicked another woman in the 500 block of Rhode Island Avenue NE and took her smartphone and her purse. The woman had been walking from the nearby Rhode Island Avenue Metro station, authorities said.

On a neighborhood e-mail forum, police said their search took them to an apartment house nearby in the 600 block of Edgewood Street NE, where a young man had been pushed against a wall in an attempt to rob him.
