Iran Backs Nuclear-Free Middle East in Dig at Israeli Arsenal

Iran supports the establishment of a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and backs efforts to dispose of existing ones in the region, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said today.

“We are at the forefront of efforts to scrap nuclear weapons,” Mehmanparast said at a press conference in Tehran aired live by Iran’s state television.

Iranian authorities complain of double standards over their country’s nuclear program, which they say is solely civilian while the U.S. and Israel say it may have military intent. Israel neither confirms nor denies its reputed nuclear-weapons arsenal. The London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies estimates that Israel has as many as 200 nuclear warheads.

The Israelis are never going to give up their nukes. That said, I don't understand why we're fine with Israel having nukes, but we're supposed to go to war if Iran gets close to having them. If both sides have nukes, neither side will use them. Mutual Assured Destruction works. Just ask the Pakistanis and Indians, who fought several wars before they both got nukes. They still hate each other, but they aren't going to war and risk their own annihilation.

No, both Aytollah's have issued Fatwa's prohibiting nuclear weapons. So if anyone can prove that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons. The Majlis would have to remove him as Ayatollah for violating the Fatwa.

The only reason Israel believes Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons is because when Israel was telling US and the UN that their nuclear program was for peaceful purposes and refusing to allow UN or US inspectors in to inspect their program. Israel knows they were lying through their teeth to the world and they were building nuclear weapons. Israel thinks that since they could not resist the temptation to build nuclear weapons.
