American Indian tribe so offended by the name Redskins, they’re willing to pay to have it changed . . . just not the team in Washington.

The Oneida Indians say they would help buy replacement school sports jerseys if the Cooperstown Redskins change their nickname.

Students of the combined middle and high school in this picturesque village 150 miles north of New York City voted this month on names to replace the Redskins nickname that goes back to the 1920s. The vote was prompted by students who found the nickname offensive to American Indians.

“You have announced a standard that recognizes that mascots which are known to dehumanize and disrespect any race of mankind have no place in our schools, or our great country,” Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter wrote to Cooperstown Central School students this week. “We understand that your courageous decision also comes with a financial consequence and, unfortunately, potential backlash from those who somehow claim that ethnic stereotyping is a victimless crime.

you must be mistaken, I didn't write the article, I merely "shared" it.
The Indian experts here can tell that to the Oneida.

Desperate for attention? This definitely needed to be a thread on its own. The other thread on this subject must not be good enough. You are a lot like Suzan Harjo.

Nah, I think the petulant one is the poster who needs attention so badly he had to start a new thread when the subject was already being discussed in another. Carry on, child.

EDMONDSON HIGH SCHOOL changed their name from the REDSKINS to THE RED STORM many years ago.

When I lived in northern Virginia in my misguided youth, I was an ardent Redskins' fan, but even then I felt bad about that name. To me it is precisely comparable to having a team named "the Washington (N-word)s." How do you think that would go over? Those who defend the Redskins name, tell me how it is different from that example? I think they could keep the same concept and logo, etc. if they changed to the Warriors or something, but Redskins is just rude and insulting. You can say it is none of my business because I am white, but wrong is wrong.

So if the Redskins left town you would stop watching football or root for no team?

    lol
It's just one of several obvious "lame deflection cards" he likes to play to redirect the subject, they're harmless to everyone....save for his self inflicted wounds.

As you can see he already tried playing the "I know you are but what am I card", wow, and of course the "you're desperate for attention card"
Ironic yes but such is the petulant pattern of the boy with over 15,000 posts who thinks every post on this r-word subject is meant specifically for him.

Back to the subject at hand, good job Oneida Tribe!!

That will never happen so I don't have to worry about it.

Worrying about it was beside the point, he asked you a hypothetical question to your childish deflection, hence the word "if".

How many times and how many examples do you need as proof that Redskins isn't remotely in the same category as the nword? Talk about selective attention.

I would be curious to see some examples cited as to how redskin is not to be construed as a derogatory name for Native Americans like racial epithets I could think of for African American, Latino, Jewish, Chinese, and other ethnic groups. I'm asking for something from the present day. I'm aware that the team's name is from many decades ago when sensitivity to this issue did not exist, but this is now.

I don't know about suddenly but the social climate and opinions on things changes all the time.

    You still avoided his question.

    what example?
    what "proof?"

If a NA tells you (a white person) that they feel as offended by the r-word as an AA feels about the n-word, where do you get off telling someone their hurt is misplaced?

Would you take the childish approach again and dismiss them and mock them for being an "activist"?
