Default What happened to Berger's cookies?

There's apparently a mystery regarding Baltimore's signature cookies.
Where are the Berger Cookies? They're not at Eddie's of Roland Park, where the fudge-topped icons have been missing for at least a week and a half. And they're not even at the Berger bakery stall at Lexington Market.

A message on Berger’s website and outgoing voicemail says the company is temporarily closed because of an illness in the family.

The last shipment received at Eddie's Market of Charles Village, according to owner Jerry Gordon, was on Jan. 31, the Thursday before the Super Bowl.

Perhaps Obama and Biden thought they were assault cookies and had them banned.

I had heard they had damage ~ possibly including a collapsed roof ~ as the actual reason that stopped production. I suppose we will find out shortly with all the interest for a local treasure.

I last had them a couple of weeks ago.

Is it just me or do they seem not as good as they used to be?

The predominant taste was less chocolate and more nondescript sweetness.

I'm sorry for the family/business but those cookies are disgusting. Bleh.

Yet, I know people who ask that a few packs be sent to them domestically and internationally. Go figure.

    Ooopsie!

They were closed down by the city's Health Department and operating without a license!

They've been operating the bakery since 1969 without a license?

"We are closed because of a family illness" is a much better (and less damaging) cover story than "we were closed by the Health Department."

At least it doesn't appear to be a sanitation issue. Just not (never?!) having a license... which seems very odd for a fairly prominent business that's been operating for decades.

Yeah that's the part I don't get it. Is DLLR really that incompetent that it took them decades to figure out the company wasn't licensed?

the government is good at passing laws and regulations ........

enforcing them, not so much .......

incompetence, coming to your health care system near you ......

never cared for the cookies, but lots of the out of town folks I work with take them home as a part of baltimore nostalgia .....

Definite chocolate overload! I start getting overwhelmed by the intensity of the chocolate icing after about half a cookie.

I guess people either love them or hate then. I've always been on the "love" side.

Another local treat is the Baltimore Bomb pie, made by Dangerously Delicious Pies in Canton. The main ingredient is broken-up Berger's cookies. Beyond decadent!
