MIT on lockdown following sighting of armed man

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says a man carrying a long rifle and wearing body armor was spotted in a campus building, and the school is on lockdown.

MIT said in a statement Saturday that several law enforcement agencies have responded.

The school advises students and workers to stay indoors and report suspicious activity to campus police.

MIT's campus was put on lockdown earlier this morning after a report of a gunman on or near campus, but Cambridge police later said their search of a campus building turned up empty. One report says police removed crime-scene tape.
