    You have a selective memory. The US began paying down the publicly held debt at the end of the Clinton years and we were in a position to eliminate the publicly held debt by the end of the 00's but Bush immediately torpedoed that. And, he got support from Greenspan who actually warned Congress about paying down the debt.
