& Whatever "doesn't seem that bad" is now an American language euphemism for ringing, resounding success: G.W.'s artwork not that bad; G.W.'s presidency not that bad; invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq not that bad. Armed forces' failure to "defend & protect" the nation on 9/11 not that bad.
Americans awfully tolerant: we cheer, nay, worship whatever "doesn't seem that bad." Our guys taking 10-12 yr to battle 13th-century enemies to a draw doesn't seem that bad. & So we reward, promote, advance, praise, worship, canonize those architects of schemes that don't seem that bad.
We demand so little that when we get so little, it just "doesn't seem that bad."
