Default Man on scooter sets fire to Wal Mart as diversion to shoplifting

Just after 12:00 AM Wednesday, Columbus police arrested 26-year-old Kevin Gillman for theft at the Walmart on Georgesville road in West Columbus.

A few hours earlier, police think the same suspect started a fire at the Whitehall Walmart around 9:40 PM to create a distraction while he was trying to steal. In surveillence video, Whitehall police say the man was seen driving around in a scooter in the store for more than an hour before he used stolen spray paint to light clothes on fire.

The suspect was seen waiting at the entrance for a getway car, but left with nothing. Whitehall police believe he later went to the Georgesville Road Walmart before he was arrested.

At nearly 500 pounds, Gillman was on a motorized scooter when he allegedly planned to steal electronics and safes, according to authorities.

Detectives said the suspect set the fire by using paint from the store as an accelerant.

Sounds inconspicuous enough; he should blend right in.
