    Default O's notes

is anyone familiar with Britt Ghiroli?
    this is her blog

    http://brittghiroli.mlblogs.com/

she covers the O's for MLB and I heard an interview with her this morning. she mostly commented on things that are happening in camp. but she was asked 2 interesting questions.

    1) who will be the starting pitchers?

she said Hammel, Chen and Gonzolez are pretty much a lock as 1-2-3.
Matusz is doing well, and may even fight his way into the 5th starter position, but it would be short lived since Bundy and Gausman are both expected to be up in Aug. (Buck is not putting too much demand on their arms in ST because he wants them available for Aug, Sept & Oct.
Hunter likes being in the BP because, as he said, "I can really air it out in that role" he likes coming in and blowing guys away.
Hunter has the attention of other teams, which makes him a trade chip if necessary.

    2) What's up with Wieters and extension talks?

the team has initiated the conversation. and MW wants to stay. she said, that may sound like standard contract speak, but here's why it isn't just that. he sees the talent here and the talents that's soon to arrive, he sees good players like AJ staying, and he lives in Sarasota, so he loves their ST location.

the hurdles: Boris never extends his clients. Matt will be 30 when he's a FA, and long contracts to 30 yr old catchers is risky. as a philosophy, DD doesn't do long contracts. the expectation is that Boris would not go for anything less than 6 years. the only way this goes smoothly is if Matt actually tells Boris what they're doing, rather than lets Boris dictate the terms and negotiations.

Matusz was so good out of the bullpen down the stretch that if he sucks at starting (again) or gets bumped for Bundy he can go back to being the LOOGY.

Boras will do what Wieters tells him. Weaver extended with LAA and he was a Boras client.

unless he is so totally dazzling in ST, that Buck can't ignore him, he's not starting the year in Baltimore. the plan is to have him and Gausman come up in Aug.
