Congratulations. If you received a refund, it means you overpaid your taxes and therefore let the government keep your money to collect interest. To answer your question, how long's it take to catch a fish? In other words, there's too many variables that can cause delays or speed up the process. Filing the short form for example takes far less time to process than the long form with all the deduction attachments. Oh, and if Congress doesn't get it's chit together by Friday and sequestration kicks in, you'll be lucky to get your federal return by July...if not later.

got my state in like 5 days. fed was like 9 days. overall fast and efficient

When your a Marylander and move to a state WITHOUT state income tax, it is really a special treat the first time, you file only your federal taxes.

I will say in fairness, that states with state incomes taxes, usually offer better employment opportunities.

I do think it is kind of neat when you work in MD for 30 years, have some money take out of your wages for a 401K and then move to Texas and Maryland gets zero state income tax on your retirement savings.

Neutral on federal, but owe quite a bit to the state....so, they'll get my check on the last day, and not a day sooner.
