Usain Bolt will get a $300,000 appearance fee to run a 200-meter race at the July 6 Diamond League meet in Paris, according to wire reports. This is noteworthy news for two reasons.

First, that's a lot of money. One silly but fun way to look at the appearance fee is in terms of hourly wage. For the sake of easy math, assume Bolt runs just hard enough to win and crosses the line in 20.00 seconds. Counting only the time he spends racing, that works out to a pay rate of $54 million per hour. (Of course, things are never this simple. Once you pay your agent, your taxes, etc., you're probably down to less than $40 million an hour.)
