    I get it started with:
    There Stands the Glass

    There Stands the Glass
    (Webb Pierce)

    There stands the glass
Fill it up to the brim
    'Til my troubles grow dim
    It's my first one today

    There stands the glass
That will ease all my pain
    Make me forget your name
    It's my first one today

I wonder where you are tonight
I wonder if you are all right
I wonder if you think of me
    In my misery

    There stands the glass
    That will open the door
    Like it once did before
    It's my first one today

    There stands the glass
Oh, how it beckons to me
How I long to be free
    It's my first one today

I wonder where you are tonight
I wonder if you are all right
I wonder if you think of me
    In my misery

    There stands the glass
That will sure ease my mind
    And will put you behind
    It's my first one today

    There stands the glass...

Ted Hawkins did it the best. RIP

Bad Liver and a Broken Heart

Well I got a bad liver and a broken heart
yea I drunk me a river since you tore me apart
    and I don't have a drinking problem
    cept when I can't get a drink
    And I wish you'd a known her
    we were quite a pair
she was sharp as a razor
    and soft as a prayer
so welcome to the continuing saga
    she was my better half
and I was just a dog
and so here am I slumped
I been chippied I been chumped
    on my stool
so buy this fool, some spirits and libations
    it's these railroad station bars
with all these conductors and the porters
and I'm all out of quarters
and this epitaph is the aftermath
    yea I choose my path
hey come on Cath, he's a lawyer,
he ain't the one for ya
and no the moon ain't romantic
    it's intimidating as hell
and some guy's trying to sell
    me a watch
And so I'll meet you at the
    bottom of a bottle of
    bargain Scotch
I got me a bottle and a dream
    it's so maudlin it seems

    you can name your poison
go on ahead and make some noise
    I ain't sentimental
    this ain't a purchase it's a rental
    and it's purgatory, hey
    what's your story, well
    I don't even care
cause I got my own double-cross to bear

and I'll see your Red Label
and I'll raise you one more
and you can pour me a cab,
I just can't drink no more
cause it don't douse the flames
    that are started by dames
    It ain't like asbestos
    it don't do nothing but
    rest us assured
    and substantiate the rumors
    that you've heard.

They Oughta Name a Drink After You
    © John Prine

Oh I get drunk most every night
Seems like all we do is fight
    The more I drink
    The less I feel blue
Sometimes I feel like an awful fool
Spendin' my life on an old bar stool
And yes I guess they oughta name a drink after you

If this date were to be our last
I'd never sit down this glass
It'd take all the booze in the world
    To forget you
You've left my heart a vacant lot
I'll fill it with another shot
And yes I guess they oughta name a drink after you

Looks like I had my fill
Guess I better pay my bill
When I started out I only meant to have a few
Someone just said that you left town
I better get a double round
And yes I guess they oughta name a drink after you

    Shelly West - Jose Cuervo

    Well it's Sunday Mornin'

    And the sun in shinin'

In my eye that is open

    And my head is spinnin'

Was the life of the party

    I can't stop grinnin'

I had to much Tequila last night

Jose Cuervo you are a friend of mine

I like to drink you with a little salt and lime

Did I kiss all the cowboys?

Did I shoot out the lights?

Did I dance on the bar?

    Did I start a fight?

Not a song, but I always enjoyed this little verse authored by some Spaniard:

I must have a drink at eleven.
At eleven it must be done.
If I don't have a drink at eleven,
I must have eleven at one.

And of course there is the "Drinking Song " from Romberg's "The Studen Prince, " not repeated here because I don't know if the copyrighted lyrics are yet in the public domain.

It has nothing to do with nothing, but I have always been a fan of

You Never Ever Called Me By My Name, David Allen Coe

Some very funny, very good drinking memories from that song...

    I Ain't Drunk
by Jimmy Liggins, but the version I know is Albert Collins:

Everyday baby, when the sun go down
I get with my friends, an' I begin to clown
I don't care, what the people are thinkin'
    I ain't drunk, I'm just drinkin'

    (But you're so high)
Oh man, you know I ain't high
    (But you're so high)
I just take a little bit, now an' then
    (But you're so high)
Now you oughta be 'shamed of yourself
    (Stay drunk all the time)
Oh, c'mon now, you know ya'all get like that

Come home last night, all loose
Baby get in a fuss, I said, "Honey, hush"
I don't care, what the people are thinkin'
    I ain't drunk, I'm just drinkin'

    (But you're so high)
    I ain't drunk, I done told ya'all I ain't drunk now
    What ya'all doin' drinkin'?
    (But you're so high)
Actually, I'm just havin' fun, man
    (But you're so high)
    What? I know I'm not
    (Stay drunk all the time)
Damn, I don't know why you're all talkin' about me like that!

You done the right thing, I wanna thank you, too
Now, let's have a little drink, just me an' you
I don't care, what the people are thinkin'
    I ain't drunk, but I'm just drinkin'

    (But you're so high)
Who me? I ain't high man
    (But you're so high)
I don't know why you all talk about me like that
    (But you're so high)
You oughta mind your own business, brother
    (Stay drunk all the time)

You, you oughta watch yourself, too
You don't understand what I'm sayin'

I wanna tip you, baby, before I go
I be back tomorrow night an' drink so mo'
I don't care, what the people are thinkin'
    I ain't drunk, I'm just drinkin'

    (But you're so high)
Oh no, you the one drunk!
    Look at yo' eyes, man!
    (But you're so high)
Don't you tell my old lady, now!
    (But you're so high)
Well I ain't had but four or five
    (Stay drunk all the time)
Six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve

The Lord Knows I'm Drinking by Cal Smith

Hello Mrs Johnson you self righteous woman
Sunday School teacher what brings you out slummin'
Do you reckon the preacher would approve where you are
Standing here vis'tin' with a back slidin' christian in a neighborhood bar
Well yes that's my bottle and yes that's my glass
I see you're eye ballin' this pretty young lass
It ain't none of your bus'ness but yes she's with me
And we don't need no sermon you self righteous woman just let us be

The Lord knows I'm drinking and running around
And he don't need your loud mouth informing the town
The Lord knows I'm sinning and sinning ain't right
But me and the good Lord's gonna have us a good talk later tonight

Goodbye Mrs Johnson you self righteous biddy
I don't need your preachin' and I don't need your pity
So go back to whatever you hypocrites do
And when I talk to heaven be nice and I'll put in a good word for you
The Lord knows I'm drinking and running around...

    Mexicali Blues
    Grateful Dead
Laid back in an old saloon, with a peso in my hand,
Watchin' flies and children on the street,
And I catch a glimpse of black-eyed girls who giggle when I smile,
There's a little boy who wants to shine my feet.

And it's three days ride from Bakersfield and I don't know why I came.
I guess I came to keep from payin' dues.
So instead I've got a bottle and a girl who's just fourteen,
And a damn good case of the Mexicali Blues. Yeh!

Is there anything a man don't stand to lose,
When the devil wants to take it all away?
Cherish well your thoughts, and keep a tight grip on your booze,
Cause thinkin' and drinkin' are all I have today.

She said her name was Billy Jean and she was fresh in town.
I didn't know a stage line ran from Hell.
She had raven hair, a ruffled dress, a necklace made of gold,
All the french perfume you'd care to smell.

She took me up into her room and whispered in my ear,
"Go on, my friend, do anything you choose."
Now I'm payin' for those happy hours I spent there in her arms,
With a lifetime's worth of the Mexicali Blues.

Is there anything a man don't stand to lose,
When the devil wants to take it all away?
Cherish well your thoughts, and keep a tight grip on your booze
Cause thinkin' and drinkin' are all I have today.

And then a man rode into town, some thought he was the law.
Billy Jean was waitin' when he came.
She told me he would take her, if I didn't use my gun,
I'd have no one but myself to blame.

I went down to those dusty streets, blood was on my mind.
I guess that stranger hadn't heard the news
Cause I shot first and killed him, Lord, he didn't even draw
And he made me trade the gallows for the Mexicali Blues.

Is there anything a man don't stand to lose
When he lets a woman hold him in her hands?
He just might find himself out there on horseback in the dark
Just ridin' and runnin' across those desert sands.

Yeah they do. And bonus for me, Sirius Outlaw Country is playing all three Hanks all weekend. Hank and Hank related music for two days. 54th aniversary of Saint Hiram of Montgomery's passing.

    In honor some Hank

There's a tear in my beer
    'cause I'm cryin' for you,dear
you are on my lonely mind.
    Into these last nine beers
I have shed a million tears.
You are on my lonely mind
    I'm gonna keep drinkin'
    until I'm petrified.
    And then maybe these tears
    will leave my eyes.
There's a tear in my beer
cause I'm crying' for you dear
You are on my lonely mind.

Last night I walked the floor
    and the night before
You are on my lonely mind.
It seems my life is through
    and I'm so doggone blue
You are on my lonely mind.
    I'm gonna keep drinkin'
    till I can't move a toe
    and then maybe my heart
    won't hurt me so.
There's a tear in my beer
cause I'm cryin' for you dear
You are on my lonely mind.

    Some JR

I've got a good woman at home who thinks I do no wrong
But sometimes Lord she just ain't always around
And you know that's when I fall I can't help myself at all
And I get whiskey bent and hell bound
Play me some songs about a ramblin' man put a cold one in my hand
Cause you know I love to hear those guitar sounds
Don't you play I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry cause I'll get all balled up inside
And I'll get whiskey bent and hell bound

Sure enough about closing time about stoned out of my mind
And I end up with some honky tonk special I found
Just as sure as the morning sun comes thinking of my sweet girl at home
And I need to get whiskey bent and hell bound
Play me some songs about a ramblin' man put old Jim Beam in my hand
Cause you know I still love to get drunk and hear country sounds
But don't you play Your Cheatin' Heart that'll tear me all apart
I'll get whiskey bent and hell bound
Yeah old Hank's songs always make me feel low down

    And some III

    Sittin' in the bayou country,
just me and my fishin' line
I raised a lot of hell and I hollered,
    sippin' on that Georgia moonshine
Well, I know how to have a damn good time
    And I take my shots
    straight out of the jug
and I like to get pure drunk
    in that Mississippi mud
Well lets throw us a little party baby,
I'll call a few friends of mine
We'll dance all night till the sun comes up
and we'll drink our selves completely blind
Then we'll rock on down the line
    And I take my shots
    straight out of the jug
and I like to do a little dance
    in that Mississippi mud
Well, I was raised by an awful alligator
he taught me how to walk the line
He used to deal cards from the bottom of the deck,
but a Tennessee woman took his life
But he sure gave me some damn good advice
    And I take my shots
    straight out of the jug
and I like to get pure drunk
    in that Mississippi mud
    And I take my shots
    straight out of the jug
and I like to do a little dance
    in that Mississippi mud

    Talking George Thorogood

    "I Drink Alone"

I drink alone, yeah, with nobody else.
I drink alone, yeah, with nobody else.
Yeah, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Now, every morning, just before breakfast,
I don't want no coffee or tea.
Just me and my good Buddy Weiser.
    That's all I ever need.

Cause I drink alone, yeah, with nobody else.
I drink alone, yeah, with nobody else.
Yeah, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Now, the other night I lay sleeping,
And I woke from a terrible dream.
So I called up my pal, Jack Daniels,
    And his partner Jimmy Beam.

And we drank alone, yeah, with nobody else.
We drank alone, yeah, with nobody else.
Yeah, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Well, the other night I got invited to a party,
    But I stayed home instead.
Just me and my pal Johnny Walker,
And his brothers Blackie and Red.

And we drank alone, yeah, with nobody else.
We drank alone, yeah, with nobody else.
Yeah, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Well, my whole family done give up on me,
And it makes me feel so bad.
The only one who'll hang out with me
Is my dear Old Grand Dad.

And we drink alone, yeah, with nobody else.
We drink alone, yeah, with nobody else.
Yeah, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.

There's A Devil In The Bottle - Hank Williams Jr.

    Genre/Lang. : Adult Contemporary

I come home late at night with my boots in my hands.
Stumble in the back door being quiet as I can.
And I know she's there in bed, cold and all alone.
and she's crying because I'm breaking up our home.
And she knows the hell I'm going through in this world inside my head.
There's a devil in the bottle lord and he wants to see me dead.
I fall into her arms and she helps me with my clothes.
Guess she stays on with me cause she really knows,
that I'm tryin' Lord, to find my freedom by excaping to the only freedom I've ever known.
And she knows the hell I'm going through in this world inside my head.
There's a devil in the bottle lord and he won't rest until I'm dead.
There's a devil living in the bottle Lord and he won't rest 'til I'm dead
and its killing her too, watching me die this way

My favorite Hank Jr. tune (and a tribute to his dad): Stoned at the Jukebox

Just as long as I can keep a lot a friends around me
Oh it helps to keep a worried mind occupied
I do alright 'til dark of night surrounds me
and then I think of her and then I cry

Lord there's a cold heart gone and I'm stoned at the jukebox
playin' I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
cause that's the kind of songs it takes to get all this hurtin' out
Lord I love that hurtin' music cause I am hurtin' too.

Lord knows I been runnin' up and down this ol' interstate 65
I loved in Nashville, Tennessee high falutin' woman I tried
now I'm busted stone flat down in Springhill
I got nothin' but time and the bottles to kill
well I never thought I could ever feel like that
