Sock on Mexican (SOM) - Where's Whitey?

An African-American teenager was found guilty Monday of assaulting a Latino restaurant worker in an attack authorities said followed the pattern of dozens of similar incidents.

In the juvenile division of Pasadena Superior Court, Commissioner Robert Leventer "sustained" a charge of assault against 17-year-old Andre Rawal of Pasadena - the equivalent of a finding of guilt in adult court. Leventer dismissed a robbery charge against Rawal.

According to Pasadena Police Department Officer Jeremy Watties, a gang expert on the department's Special Enforcement Section, the attack was similar to more than 80 documented "SOM," or "Sock on Mexican" attacks in Pasadena.

In the assaults, groups of up to 20 African- American youths have attacked and robbed Latino men leaving work alone at night, Watties testified.

Watties said such attacks are methods by which younger gang members are "crimed into" the Pasadena Denver Lanes and the Projeck Gangsters, two major African-American Blood gangs in Pasadena.

In the past couple of years, Pasadena police have been investigating the street term for these attacks -- "SOM," which stands for "Sock On Mexican."

It's a term that the Pasadena Police Dept. does not like to use, but one term they like to use is "arrest." And they've made a significant amount of arrests in this case.

It's a street term that Pasadena police find offensive.

"We believe that the term 'SOM' is offensive and humiliating, and we don't use it, to be frank with you," said Pasadena Police Dept. Deputy Chief Christopher Vicino. "We have termed the attacks that we have seen on the streets to be 'Street Youth Attack.' " [Ah yes... the PC euphemism to diminish the racial and racist nature of the attacks]

In the past two years, Pasadena police have investigated 69 of these "Sock On Mexican" attacks. They've made nearly two dozen arrests in connection to these crimes that have happened in Pasadena's northwest neighborhood.

Welcome to the West and Los Angeles in particular. Racial tensions between Blacks and Hispanics have been running high for decades. We have seen stories about Mexican gangs targeting Black civilians for extermination based on their skin color as the sole factor (ethnic cleansing if one will) in multiple locations throughout Los Angeles County (e.g. The Avenues, Conoga Park Alabama, the Cheryl Green killing, etc.) I am sure, however, that some posters, instead of blaming the specific individuals involved in these cases will (secondary to their guilt for something done by those long dead) find a way to blame "White Communities."

853. On or about 8/18/98, at approximately 2030 hours, a group of approximately ten SSCH gang members were walking on Roland Way toward Cuesta Del Mar. As they crossed Cuesta Del Mar, they saw a small group of local Samoan and African American males standing in front of an apartment complex. The SSCH gang members began yelling gang slogans and racial slurs towards the Samoans and challenged them to fight. A large fight broke out, largely without weapons. Although outnumbered, the Samoans were tougher and stronger. In the end, SSCH gang member Enrique Hernandez, aka “Little Vandal”, was stabbed in the chest. His friends loaded him into a car and took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead (see hospital personnel providing medical care to the victim, right) [pg. 179].

So HST2... let us see if we can find a way to blame the all inclusive "White Communities." Perhaps not enough hugging of thugs? Or not enough sharing of extorted funds thrown away on social programs that do nothing to solve the problems for which they were created? Perhaps because Whites exist (I am sure that this is enough for some)? Perhaps because the Bloods like the color red (that has to be Whitey's fault somehow)?
