I don't get the "its more thrilling to kill with a primitive weapon" angle. If so why don't you try to take a deer with an atlal, or a rambo knife? I bet that would really get your juices flowing. Besides, modern bows are as accurate and deadly as most smooth bore shotguns. It isn't like you guys are hunting with a recurve.

Are modern compounds accurate? Oh yes, they are. But unlike a smoothbore shotgun, I still have to raise the bow, come to full draw, anchor, aim and release, which is a helluva lot more movement for the deer to pick up than it is for a shotgun.

And now matter how accurate they are, 50 yards is still WAY out there for an arrow- no matter the bowhunter.

As for that atlatl....I'd love to try that! Probably hard as hell, though. I'm sure the Neanderthal or Cro-Magnon didn't care how many they wounded as long as they got one kill, though.

You may as well be speaking in Latin as to try to explain the difference bowhunting, and gun hunting to a non-hunter. They'll never get it... ever.

... and I recently saw a hunting show where two guys each had an atlal, and were killing wild hogs with them. Impressive.

I don't bow for the very reason they are not as accurate as a smooth bored in the hands of of someone who is not proficient, not to mention you don't have a back up shot.

And with todays rifled slugs for smooth bores, they are pretty dead nuts on at 50 yds for just about anyone who can point.

Bow hunting is the ultimate hunting experience that takes skill and lots of practice and in no way can be compared to a slug gun, rifled or not.

Which is why I'm shooting a bow somewhere almost every weekend.
The 65 yard tiny 4 arrow group I mentioned above was shot at the "Hillbilly" competition field shoot at Cumberland Bowhunters over the July 4th weekend. Seems like 65 yards is my "sweet spot" because I tend to shoot best there.

I actually practice less during hunting season because I spend my time hunting, but about every third, or fourth Sunday I shoot just to make sure I'm still sighted in properly.

I had a friend that made a bet with a guy that he could shot a tighter three shot group at 25 yards with his bow then the guy could with a scoped 270 rifle shooting offhand no rest or sling.

My friend won that bet

I'd take that bet too.

I've got two robinhoods on my clubroom wall that were both shot from 30 yards. I've actually shot the vanes off of quite a few arrows too.

When my bows are properly tuned, and I'm not tired I can shoot them pretty danged good, but there are alot of folks out there better than I am.

Funny I have two robinhoods also...one with aluminum shafts and one with goldtip graphite shafts...both were done back in my younger days. I have found that the closer I get to fifty the less closer my groups are.

I started bowhunting in the early 80s, and used to shoot between 100 and 200 arrows each evening. 20 yards or so, that was as much distance as I could get in my Balto. City back yard. I was constantly replacing nocks and fletching due to arrow strikes.
