Default The Movie Event of the Year- "AVATAR"

James Cameron (You know.. True Lies, The Abyss, Aliens, Titanic, Terminator 1 & 2) has been wanting to make this movie for a decade and a half, but technology has only now come to the point where he could bring his vision to life. He wrote, directed, produced, and was cinematographer for his newest endeavor- AVATAR.

I had the pleasure of viewing 16minutes of this film, using a new 3D technology that Cameron created specifically for Avatar. I mentioned it before on this forum that it 'made love to my eyeballs', and that I nor anyone else had seen anything like it before. Fully impressive, and the CG effects are barely noticeable (given Cameron's track record, I would expect no less).

A new trailer has come out for this movie, and I am spreading the word to you good people of the Sun forum- If you are the type that avoids movie theaters and prefers home viewing, I urge you to reconsider that stance for this film as you will not get to experience the immersion this spectacle offers no matter how good your setup is.

To me it just doesn't look as good as the hype. I mean I love all his films, but he has been working on this for a few years now. And really it doesn't look that special to me. I will still go see it, but so far the trailers aren't doing it for me. So lets see if it lives up to the hype....

The trailer does it no justice because it is in 2D. The 3D that was demonstrated for me in the 16minutes of clips I saw blew me away. I've never seen anything like it, and THAT is what's going to make this movie "Epic". I know its hard to accept "just take my word for it", but hopefully that's enough to entice people out of their homes and into the theater for this one- because watching it on a home theater setup will not do it justice.

What makes this 3D different from other 3D? Isn't 3D...3D? Ive seen 3D used poorly and cheaply where things are "thrown at you" and have seen it used well to show depth in scenes.

the difference is, this 3D surrounds you. it's not just you looking at a screen where 3D objects jump out. The 3D technology used in AVATAR was developed specifically for this film. The 3D fills your entire field of vision, and shows depth in a way I've never seen before. I've seen just about every 3D movie to come out in the past few years, and this is by far the next-generation of that kind of technology. Everything on screen looks like it has mass, like it actually would exist in the theater you are watching it in. I can't really describe it beyond that, it'd be like asking me to describe a hologram to a blind person.

Looks like cowboys vs indians in space. I think they called this "how the west was won" back in the '70s.

sorry, but if it's a weak story, a flimsy plot, I don't care how many dimensions it's shown in; it's going to fall flat.

ask yourself... when has james cameron made a bad sci-fi movie? (he kinda directed 3 of the best sci-fi movies of all time)
why would someone assume this groundbreaking movie wouldnt be backed up by a cameron-worthy epic story?

Yeah, that's what I thought, 2D and all it still looks amazing to me on my computer monitor. The story is that age old small band of powerless natives with a born leader out front, fighting overwhelming evil and weapons odds, looked very Star Wars to me. Original SW, not the last 3 films.

It looks interesting. Im still not sure how I feel about it yet. And Im certainly not a fan of going to theaters to watch a movie unless I really want to see something bad

last night 60 mins profiled James Cameron and did a lot of talk on Avatar, which to me looks like a basic Cowboys vs. Indians plot - the Earth people [Cowboys] find planet Pandora with it's blue people [Indians] and they want the planet's resources, so they invade, but try to get an infilitrator into the good graces of the pandorans, that guy is a paralzyed vet whom the Earthlings download into a genetically modified clone type part human blue Pandoran warrior so he can appear to be one of the natives. Big battles ensue, I'm guessing the Blue natives win this one. Cue curtains.

But I'm still going to see in 3D if possible.

Didn't he have something to do with both "The Abyss" and "Solaris"?
