Remember it like it was yesterday. He was going to play for the Celtics, my team. I'll never forget how excited I was when I heard the Celtics had drafted him. It was too good to be true. And then, in one tragic moment, it was over. Len Bias is one of the most poignant What Might Have Been stories of all time. A terrible waste of a life and talent.

Looking forward to watching it.

I loved watching Len Bias when he played for the Terps. His game was off the hook. My son doesn't believe me when I tell him that Lenny was going to be a superstar in the NBA....and I'm talking as good as Michael Jordan.....

What a tradgedy

I remember going from total elation that the Celtics had drafted their next great legend to crying when the news broke of his passing.

His death sent the Celtics into a tailspin that they are just now recovering from.

Maybe better than Jordan you just never know. Considering who Bias had to mentor and help him grow (i.e. Bird, McHale, Johnson, Ainge, Parish) versus all the bums Jordan had around him that he could learn absolutely nothing from, Bias could have easily developed into one of the greatest, if not the greatest. Had Biased actually played in the NBA I think it would have changed the course of NBA Championships especially between the Lakers and Celtics. IMHO. (#34) R.I.P.

I agree with everything up until the two teams.

The Celtics would've remained in title contention therefore knocking the Pistons down at least a ring but I really think the Bulls would've lost a couple of rings because of Len's presence.

People forget that while Jordan was the slightly better athlete, Len had the better J, could jump higher and had a work ethic that rivaled Jordan's. Lenny would've been a three in the Assoc. which means he and MJ would've bumped heads occasionally. His handle would've improved as well but not to the level of MJ. These two would've been special to watch go against each other.

A lot of people don't know that Gatlin was working with him daily to improve his handle. It wou lhave been special to see him and Jordan battle

Your posts made me think of another great player who died too young up in Boston - Reggie Lewis. But if you want to see just how small this world is, check this link...

when you think about it, it's not such a "small world" considering the number of cops in one city...the number of responders, etc. we're not talking million to one.

This really brings me back. I was about 8 years old when he died. At that age, he was like a superhero and he was a local product. I remember going to basketball camp in PA a couple years later and Lefty Drissell was one of the speakers. He was so passionate about Len and essentially gave us an hour long "say no to drugs speech."

I was too young (3 yrs old when he passed) to remember Len Bias, but I always love watching his highlights, especially the game where I think Maryland gave UNC it's first loss at the Dean Dome. His teammate Adrian Branch spoke at my high school, and had some really great stories to tell about Len. Definitely looking forward to seeing this documentary.

I will always remember the day Len Bias died . I was In Ocean City, Md for senior beach week . I called home to tell them I was ok when my mom told me Len Bias just died. I was on a pay phone on the boardwalk ,right in front of Dough Rollers and started crying . I'm a huge Terps fan and couldn't believe he was gone just like the wind .So sad, what a great person and player.

I was only 4 at the time so I don't have many memories of Len Bias, this was a great documentary about what went on and all the vents that surrounded his death.

Never knew that his death was why they past the harsh drug laws relating to coke.

Also, such BS how pretty much the entire basketball heirarchy at UMD were forced to resign after this. Like it was their fault Bias OD'ed on coke??? Come on.

Ridiculous.

Here's the schedule - it's reairing this week. It was a really well done documentary and not what I was expecting. I won't spoil it for you.

Having gone to UMD and in the athletic dept at the same time as Len, it was a huge wake up call. I had already graduated when he died, but his death hung over College Park for nearly a decade. I've never seen a more revered and loved athlete on a college campus than Lenny.
