Did anyone see that fantastic Documentary that CBS aired about Maryland Basketball called "Tragedy to Triumph"? It was fantastic, it was about how Gary Williams took the Terps from dead to a championship. I'm dying to watch it again, especially after watching the Len Bias story. Anyone know where to find it?

unfortunately she wasn't strong in her parenting skills. not judging, it's a tough job...kids'll do what they want in the end...they'll wear you down...day by day...but that's where the "strength" comes in. both deaths were via choice...not a good batting avg.

Please explain how Jay Bias' death was "via choice."

Police said yesterday they had found no indication that Bias and Tyler knew each other, or that drugs played any role in the slaying.
Campbell said he, Mathis and Bias, all mail room employees at the Sovran Bank operations center a few miles away, went to the mall on their lunch break in Mathis's four-wheel-drive Toyota.
Campbell and Mathis visited other stores while Bias was in the jewelry shop.
Police said a jewelry clerk, Tyler's wife, told Bias that his $800 ring could not be picked up for several hours.
Bias was chatting with the clerk, waiting for his friends, when Tyler arrived, police said.
The two men argued in the store, with Tyler accusing Bias of flirting with the woman, according to the police.
When Campbell and Mathis returned, Campbell said, the three of them left, with Tyler following.
"The guy kept saying to Jay, 'C'mon outside, c'mon outside,' " Campbell recalled. ". . . And Jay was saying, like, 'Look, I'm just purchasing a ring . . . . All this stuff ain't necessary, man.' "
Bias and his friends left the mall through one door and Tyler through another, according to Campbell.
Minutes later, as they waited at a stop sign just beyond the mall parking lot, Campbell said, a Mercedes-Benz stopped on the passenger side of Mathis's Toyota, toward the rear.
The assailant leaned over the driver and pointed a gun out of the driver's side window, he said. Police said five to eight shots were fired.

I am from Iowa and followed the Big 8 conference. I had actually never even heard of the Terps. But I did hear about Len Bias and his tragic death. I don't remember what I was doing or where I was when I heard the news because I did not know who he was but I remember it because he was so young and it was so tragic. It wasn't until I moved to Maryland and someone mentioned him that I put two and two togehter that he was from the University of MD. So, his story made an impact on people all over the country even those of us that had never heard his name until his death. I watched the documentary with my husband and he said Len had amazing skill. Even the old clips showed an athlete that is stellar even by today's standards. I wish I had been able to watch him play. God rest his soul and God Bless his family. If you did not see this you need to set the DVR--it is a must see.

You must have missed the part where Jay walked away from the altercation only to have the guy follow him and shoot him. No parent has total control over their child once they leave the front door. You can only hope that what you taught them will keep them safe. If Len decided to do coke, that was his choice. I'm sure his mother didn't feel the need to remind him not to because there were no signs of coke usage. Your comments were not only incorrect but insensitive.

Wow, Rm 222 be incorrect, insensitive and just an all around (insert expletive here)? I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.
And Navypost, yeah, maybe not quite as thick, but just as good a leaper and with a better post game and jump shot. Still makes me mad and breaks my heart at the same time to think about it even after this long.

I watched this again and I have the feeling that they still haven't presented the entire story. His teammates and closest friends all knew that Len was doing coke and knew that he had been doing it for some time. Otherwise, if they were truly his friends I don't see how they could sit in a room and watch him do coke after being drafted to play in the NBA and not say anything. It seems to me that it was an accepted practice - they had seen him doing coke before and thought he could handle it. He SOMEHOW passed all the drug test - NCAA and NBA unless of course both teams turned a blind eye to their prize athlete.

That one guy Tribble still seems to be a sketchy guy to this day. He seemed to be the only one saying that Bias had used cocaine before the day he died. Bias passed all the drug tests the Celtics gave him, so it is possible he overdosed because he was not familiar with it and ingested way too much. It's tragic any way you look at it.

I'd have to agree that the documentary left stuff out.
We're left with the impression that Bias went directly from his parents' home to his campus dorm where he partied 'til passing out. I recall there was an allegation that he left the dorm for a period of time to run an errand.

I am going to watch it again but didn't they say he had no traces in his nostrils and no needle marks? So the assumption is that he 'drank' pure cocaine? It just doesn't add up.

great piece. My only question about it is this: what the f*** is John Thompson doing on there? He hated Maryland and hates Maryland, and wouldn't play Maryland unless the NCAA told him to. His son carries on the tradition.
I was glad to hear from the ol' left-hander. What an era in Terps history that was, the UCLA of the East, etc. Too bad that he had to be the fall guy for Bias' death. It still makes me wonder if coaches are to take their players by the hand and guide them around the campus.

Why does anyone on this board feel the need to all of sudden become investigative reporters?
The man played with fire and got burnt.
He paid the ultimate price and has been gone for 33 years now.
Let's just all remember the times we've seen what could have been the greatest player ever play the sport of basketball and not forget the dat of June 19, 1986,.

Jordan didn't need great teammates, he had the officials and the league higher ups in his pocket.
