Red Sox-Rays game erupts in brawl

Coco Crisp expected there might be some payback after Wednesday night's controversial slides into second base. So, when Tampa Bay starter James Shields hit Crisp with a pitch in the second inning, it first appeared Crisp might just go to first base. Instead, Crisp dropped his bat, flipped his helmet and charged the mound. He dodged Shields's punch and then hit Shields before being taken down by catcher Dioner Navarro. Tampa DH Jonny Gomes got in a few shots on Crisp as both dugouts emptied and jumped into the fray. When it was sorted out, Crisp and Shields were ejected. Righthander Grant Balfour took over on the mound for Tampa Bay.

Gomes landing punches.

Now that could hurt. Crisp is gonna feel those!!

Just what you want though - your big starter getting tossed in the second inning.

Neither team ready for prime time.

Good way of getting one of the Rays best pitchers out of the game early and piling up some runs. Crisp was no loss to the Sox.

Yep, that's taking one for the team. Or two, or three...

Crisp needs to get the most. He talked about it during and after the game last night. It is funny watching that little runt get tough though.

I predict that Shields,Coco and Gomes get sat down for about 4-5 games and that Madden gets no suspension

I saw it on NESN Gomes and Crawford both were hitting Crisp while Navarro had him pinned. I think the Rays a bunch of thugs and hope Selig hits them hard.

I view it as Crisp running his large mouth and getting some payback accordingly. He knew he was going to get hit and he planned on attacking Shields today. IMO he got what he deserved.

Remember that whole thing between Seattle and Baltimore back in the 90's ???

Well, the backup catcher for Seattle was basically the same, all talk and no action

I would have "plunked" him too (maybe not in the shoulder but in his backside

He got hit and that's payback but to have a player pin you down while 2 thugs hit you is bull %$#@

He planned on going after one of their best pitchers. It was payback was it fair? No. Did he have it coming? Yes.

You know, Crisp is a ******.....

He got drilled in the leg, above the knee. If you get hit, that is probablly the best place to get drilled.

He should have been expecting to get drilled, base on his hard slides the day before. Shields was sticking up for his team mates, and I feel that he did a good job getting the message across. He could have thrown at his head, hands, ribs, etc...but did not. He hit him to let him know that his 'hard play' was not appreciated.

Crisp should have taken his base and kept his mouth shut. The way he gets back at shields is stealing 2nd, 3rd, and scoring.

This is has been and always will be a part of the game. Take it like a man, and play ball....

You can link to a Youtube video from FioxNews.com.

IMO - Shields hit him low - no problem there.

Crisp should get a suspension along with Gomes, Crawford and one other Ray I couldn't figure out who it was who were punching Crisp while Navarro had him pinned on the ground. I agree - Navarro was just trying to subdue him it looked like.

Lost respect for the three that were dog piling on Crisp. They weren't just protecting their pitcher - they were blowing steam for the slide or something. Uncool.

Ditto Crisp. I agree with those who think he was planning on what he did.

Also have to love the Sox fans who were cheering for Crisp. Class all the way there.

Great coverage here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gxpg8R_-pnY

This shows the baserunning incidents from previous game that set it all up - I'd say the 2nd slide by Crisp was pretty dangerous - over the top - the block of the base in first slide is 'natural' and poor Coco hurt his pinky!!! What crap, what a baby! I say Crisp deserved it after that hard takeout slide - an overreaction from his hurting his thumb...
