Default Things to do in Baltimore

serious non nasty answers only this time.

I need to know from the people that live there, what is there to do?
lets say you found yourself in a hotel for a week somewhere along the water front area. what would you enjoy as a tourist, what things are there around that area that would make Baltimore attractive to you if you were not from there?

I promise that on this thread I wont bash Baltimore, and I hope that others can refrain from doing so also.

Ill let you know in a month or so why Im asking.

While in Baltimore.......DUCK!!
Seriously, the waterfront area has lots to do from the harbor to Fells Point. Good restaurants and bars. At the inner harbor area there are other sightseeing attractions. Comedy club near by. Check with the concierge.

Go eat at LightHouse Inn (Federal Hill), the Thai place , or grab a salad at the Italian place (both on Light Street across from Cross St Market)

There's also a really nice photography studio on S. Charles Street near the Market.

Hit up a few museums one over by President Street, the other I believe on Charles St (Walters).

Check out the B&O Museum on W Pratt Street (at S. Poppleton)

Get a sandwich from Atmanns.

See Ft. McHenry. Take some pictures.

Nightlife, I guess you can hang out at a bar ... there are a zillion of them.

Ride on a Water Taxi. Go from Fed Hill to S. Anne Street .... eat some really good sushi and calamari at Kawasaki. Excellent green tea (no sugar) also, plus Japanese ice cream. Travel to the antique shop and tell the retired Lt owner I said hello "cool guy" . If you're into drunken college girls, I suppose you could hang out in Fells Point.

If you're into walking a trail, I suggest Cylburn Aboretum. Nice, quiet, and relaxing.

The refurbished Basilica of the Assumption is a must see I would say. It is the oldest Catholic Cathedral in the US and has been restored to what Benjamin Latrobe intended. It is stunning.

I always love Fort McHenry. The Museum of Industry is way cool too.

A nice spring or summer evening walking around Little Italy is great. Smelling the bread baking and the garlic sizzling really gets you ready to eat.

Fells Point is cool and funky. Lots of shops.

Kids love the Aquarium. I like the Torsk.

The Sports Legends and Babe Ruth Museum are lots of fun, as is the tour of Camden Yards.

I could easily spend a day in the Maryland Room at the Enoch Pratt.

How long are you gonna be there?
These are all things I would do as well. Also, the B&O Railroad Museum, Streetcar Museum, the new African-American history museum, Flag House, Shot Tower...etc. Tons of historical stuff, which I personally love. Oh, and the Visionary Arts Museum is fantastic, lots of fun. BMA and Walters are both free admission right now, which is amazing.

Then, tons of great restaurants/bars in Mt. Vernon, Fells, Canton, Butcher's Hill, Fed Hill.

I would also say that on a nice summer day, a walk around Druid Hill Park is pretty tough to beat.

I second these as well. We should be friends! (Who'da thunk it?! )

I love to eat in Greektown and the Hippo has some great show. Artscape is always highlighted on my summer calendar. I don't know if the bay is Baltimore but the Chesapeake is Maryland's greatest asset and I have spent many fine days on and in her waters.

Druid Hill Park.... the Conservatory. That's a pretty short visit but has some nice flowers. Walking the Park is quite pleasant next to the water or you can pop into the Zoo (for a price).

Any of the markets, (ie Cross St, Hollins Street, Lexington). Hollins St had some wonderful after hours places years ago. Roody had a pastry shop on Arlington Ave and he was from Austria....wonderful pastries. Sadly, those have shut down. Shame shame shame. Rattlesnake beer is gone forever.

Make certain to get some Burger Cookies (any local store) as they are made here in Baltimore. (no I won't say where, its a well guarded secret) ..... Eat crabs!!! Yeah! LOts of crabs. They'll be better, bigger, and cheaper at LightHouse than at Phillips.

If you are willing to go into the County a bit I'd let you know where you can get some steamed corn (in the husk) with Old Bay.

Check out the market under the JFX on a Sat or Sun. Fresh veggies and nothing is small.

Jay Rays on S Carey and Herkimer (a block from the B&O museum) a notorious Police Bar has some of the best steamed shrimp around. (only on Tuesdays)

That Thai place had the best fried rockfish I have ever eaten. Just so you know it will have the head attached .... some damn good eatin'.

Crab cakes, call the Southeastern District (410.396.2422) for directions. Jimmies has the best and biggest.

OMG, Greek salad, "Samos" on Oldham Street.

Pizza? Federal Hill, either Maria D's (NY style) or Hilltop on Federal Ave.

Authentic pit BBQ(Pulaski Hwy), the famous Lake Trout (Washington and Lafayette...er, bring others with you) or Reisterstown Rd (bring others with you here too). Don't dilly dally too long.

A cheese steak....take people with you because it must come from the "inner city" for it to be good. (ie. a rough neighborhood) No Canton or Fells point crap either.

Little Italy food, I suggest Sabatinos or the Boat restaurant (Captain James on Aliceanne St).

A trip on the Lady Baltimore to Annapolis.

Carol Park for golf and the Gwynns Falls Trail. (walk, bike ride, etc.)

Baltimore has some wonderful sights and damn good food...its just that psychotic behavior which keeps it from being what it should be.

I know, I am just saying that the Bay is Maryland's, not Baltimore's.

The Aquarium is fantastic, especially the new exhibit of the Austrailian rain forrest.

I also love the Zoo, the Science Museum, Babe Ruth museum and Sports Legends Museum is a must see for sports fans.

If you like Boradway shows, you can find that down town as well for a pretty decent price.

I'm well past clubiing so those places are out for me..

Nick's off of Hanover and Insulator Drive has some great sea food. A bit costly but the duck salad is to die for. Very good atmosphere too on the water's edge.

Their Happy Hour is pretty good too. Either the drinks are rather cheap or the bartender forgets to bill me for all the drinks we get...

I go there once a week.

I might visit Harbour Place after picking up my son from school where he attends in Baltimore.
