Playing its second game in as many days, the Edgewood boys basketball team earned its first win Tuesday by beating visiting Elkton, 72-67, in Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference Chesapeake Division play.
The Rams (1-1 overall) used a strong second half to pull off the win. Edgewood trailed 35-27 at the half, but scored 20 or more points in each of the final two quarters behind its pressure defense to secure the victory.
“We got in the second half and coach [was] telling us defense is the key, so we came out and played hard and we finished it off,” junior guard Deandre Maxxwell said.
Edgewood opened the second half with an 8-0 run, which tied the game at 35. A Marcus Hicks 3-pointer put the Rams ahead, 40-37, but Elkton answered with its own 8-0 run to slide back in front, 45-40.
Hicks’ second three had Edgewood back within two points, 47-45. Baskets by Maxxwell and Kameron Rankin put the Rams back on top. Another Maxxwell basket gave Edgewood 24 points in the quarter and a 51-49 lead.
The Rams then scored four points in the first 48 seconds of the fourth quarter and Elkton called timeout.
The stoppage had little effect. Made 3-pointers from Deion Metz and Rankin helped Edgewood boost its lead to double-digits, 63-52, with 4:20 left in the game.
Elkton (0-1), though, didn’t give in. The Elks went on another 8-0 run to climb back to within three, 63-60. A Jamar Corprew put-back basket after a missed three snapped the Elks run and gave Edgewood a 65-60 lead with 2:22 left.
The teams traded baskets the final two minutes to close out the five-point Rams win.
“We didn’t come out with a lot of energy last night and in the first half tonight we didn’t,” Rams coach Terry Maczko said. “In the second half we came out, we had the energy, forced the turnovers, got some easy buckets as result of it and we’re able to do a few things. It’s a long way to go though.”
Maxxwell led Edgewood with 20 points, while Metz added 15 and Hicks netted 12.
“A lot of turnovers the second half and we didn’t have any guard play,” Elks coach Charles Given Sr. said. “Somebody who can actually come in and say, I want the basketball and I’m going to control this game for our behalf and do whatever. We just didn’t have that.”
Elkton’s Erijae Williams scored 22 points to lead all scorers, while Zyan Williams scored 12. Jaden Nichols contributed nine points.

Milton Wright executed effectively and Joppatowne didn’t capitalize on our opportunities and turned the ball over entirely, too much to have won the game,” Mariners coach Jesse Jones said. “Costly mistakes on both ends of the floor, we have a long week of practice to regroup, as this was our only game for the week, so we’ll be putting in a lot of work in practice to focus on the areas that we need to improve upon.”
CMW led at half, 27-12.
