Well, I didn't get an elk

I went on my Montana Wilderness elk hunt in September and came home without any elk meat. I cannot say I came home empty handed though because I have some absolutely fantastic memories!

The wilderness was unbelievable. The scenery was like nothing I have ever seen. The horses were incredible. I still can't believe they went where they did and what they were able to climb and get over.

We heard elk bugling but could not get them to come out of the timber and we couldn't get to them. We did watch, from across the canyon, the Billie Goat hunter in camp get his goat.

Here are a few photos (if the links work)

Beautiful pics! Reminds me of my black bear hunt in Grand Forks, British Columbia in '96. Well, the eastern slopes, anyway. The western slopes were totally flush with green moss like the Pacific NW from all the rain, but the eastern slopes were semi-arid with sparse vegetation.

One day....ONE DAY....I will get to Big Sky Country. Hopefully for muleys.

Big Sky Country is beautiful, whether it's the eastern prarie type section or the mountains. Our first trip to Montana was in the NE corner where it is rolling land with coulees and then the Missouri Breaks, they are wild.

Our next trip will be mulies, and probably comboed with antelope, but it will be in eastern Wyoming near Devils Tower.

We saw some mulies on this trip, and had tags, but nothing worth taking. We also had a brown phase black bear within 100 yards but I didn't have a bear tag. I did get video of it though.

I am sure you will get there, it's worth it.
