Earliest sunset approaching

40 posts in this topic

Wow, 4:43pm!!  That seems so crazy!

I don't mind the dark until January, then I need daylight, or I get the blues.

Mock--

Fortnuately, by January the sunset will be noticeably later, while sunrise is still getting later and later until the beginning of January, when it finally turns around.

It's all because of the analemma.

You know that figure 8 symbol you see on some globes?  That's the analemma.  It shows the relative position of the sun at noon.

This time of year, (the bottom of 8), there's a rapid change in the relative position of the sun.

That's early.  Like living in Maine, although with milder temperatures.

And that's on the south coast (very close to the Prime Meridian line), the further north you go it gets dark earlier, even London it would be 3 minutes earlier. ;)

Up in New Jersey now, about 150 miles northeast of  Baltimore where the sunset currently is about 12 minutes earlier.

Makes me think of that old Lennon-McCartney song; I'll Follow The Sun. :)
