I said the same thing. USA is arguable the weakess team in that table. And guess what they have their "Hill" in the table in Ghana. Nice. Englad has a tough one as well

And Mexico which somehow qualified despite a poor run-up has a realtively easy group.  A literal example of the luck of the draw.

So, Germany clobbered Portugal, the US beat Ghana, and then Ghana tied Germany.

Defending champion Spain lost its first two matches.

Belgium just beat Russia with a late goal.  I am heading out to Prettyboy for a few hours of kayaking but I want to be back to watch the US play.

The US would have won except that five minutes of "stoppage time" had been added, allowing for Portugal to tie the game.

Everyone in Group G still has a chance.

If the U.S. beats Germany, the No. 2 team in the world, in the final group play game Thursday, they go through to the knockout stage no matter what happens in other group-play game between Portugal and Ghana game. The same thing happens if both games end in tries.

Now here’s where it gets tricky. If the U.S. loses and Ghana beats Portugal by more than one goal, then Ghana eliminated the U.S. -- again -- and the Americans go home.

I am a soccer novice.  I have really enjoyed watching.  But that "extra minutes" thing drives me nuts.

Spain is out, Italy is out. If Portugal also gets sent home after Thursday's matches, it will be quite a blow to southern European soccer. All three teams came in as at least contenders, and I believe Spain and Portugal were expected to make at least the final 8.

So neither Germany nor US needs to win, in order to advance? A draw and both advance. Is that correct?

If so, then both are playing NOT to lose. Is there any advantage, for either team, to play to win? Don't think much of that format.

USA did play a bit defensively but both were playing to win and pressing the goal even in 90+ minute ......

played to win for seeding, and the draw in the knockout round ......

USA is #2 seed and play a #1 seed in next game, certainly would have like to win bracket  ......

congrats to the USA for getting out of the group of death .........

and congrats to U of Md with 2 Terps in the starting lineup today ......

Congrats to USMNT on advancing even with the defeat Thursday.

Schweinstieger was killing the US. That guy was all over the place. Him and Howard were the best players out there.

What World Cup? When someone mentioned it, I first thought they were talking about those Rich guys with the Sailboats. Bottom line, Soccer is Not a Major Sport here in the US unless you're under like 12yrs old or an Immigrant. All of the "Pro" Soccer leagues here both indoor and out are struggling. Many teams have folded. Don't even have to mention that most of the "Urban" society doesn't pay attention to it at all.

Uhh, the World Cup that found the US out after losing to Belgium yesterday.

On Monday, Germany beat Algeria and France beat Nigeria, while yesterday Switzerland lost to Argentina in addition to the US-Belgium game.
