Did Anyone Else Get a Crazy Water Bill??

53 posts in this topic

I haven't gotten mine yet for this quarter.  I know there was some rate adjustment on my last one.

Mine was almost triple the amount of what it normally is. Did I miss something???

The city needs Mo Money since the speed camera scam has been put on hold

You can appeal and will probably win BUT you have to fax in a request and will have to go down there at an appointed time to meet with a commisioner, you will also waste a whole day down there waiting for them to hear your appeal so bring a charger for your iphone or ipad.

it might be worth it because there is a good chance your future bills will reflect this current high bill since they dont actually read the meter many quarters and just estimate what they think you should be charged based off of previous bills.

Two years later ...

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/bs-md-ci-water-bills-20161220-story.html

Baltimore switches to monthly water billing, some residents say they have received bills for tens of thousands of dollars more than they actually owe.

One homeowner in Baltimore's Medfield neighborhood got hit with a $35,000 water bill. Another in Northwest Baltimore received a bill for more than double that amount. A third, in South Baltimore, was even higher: Nearly $81,000.

"Obviously, we were startled by such an absurd amount," homeowner Michael Matten said.

The water bills are totally outrageous.  I got mine just when they started the monthly thingy I mentioned some months ago.  Well my three month period ended a month before the change went into affect which gave me a four month bill which is outrageous.

Supposedly the city has a new water-billing system.  Seems to not work, just like the old one.

Oh well, one day it will get better, right?

The city can't seem to do anything right except vote themselves nice raises for the fine job they do running things.

Mine looked like it was Smaller for the month than what I was being billed Quarterly on Minimum. I'm by myself and there's No Way I was using 35gal/day by myself.

Mine has gone down nearly half. I usually run around $250-$300 per quarter, I've had 3 monthly bill; $42, $73, $55 = ~$170. The difference in each month makes no sense I haven't done anything different water wise in the past 3 month.

I hope that Mayor Pugh will be the one to finally do the things that need to be done to help turn Baltimore around. Problems like this have been ignored and allowed to go on for far too long under the other mayors.

Smh. The city should be ashamed. Pugh needs to focus on this.

Baltimore's High Water Rates Violate UN Standards

Btw that rate I complained about years ago became my new norm.

I am completely confident that she'll not only look into it but she do A Lot to resolve the matter favorably for the citizens of Baltimore.

I'll stay tuned.

Here to add to the list of issues.  Just had a new Digital water meter put on my house.  Over a 35 day period I used 371 (100cubic ft) of water. Which came out to be 2151 gallons of water a day. $695

Needless to say I am not happy. Typically my bill is $50.  I turned off the water to the house adn checked the meter. No leaks.

I contacted downtown. They said they would ahve a guy contact me in 2 days HAHAHA. 2 weeks later still calling trying to get a guy to come out and look at their meter.

This isn't going to go well I can tell.

Last year I got an extremely large one...made it look like we were filling up multiple pools.  I called them up and they had me read the meter (the one in the basement, not the outdoor one they read.)  They adjusted the bill and installed a new meter.  We didn't pay the big bill, but somehow they ended up giving us an additional big credit which just recently got used up after all this time.  I guess the defective meter had been incorrect for a while, but not in the extreme amount that finally clued us in.  Of course I don't live in Baltimore so YMMV.

Yea I don't have a meter in my basement otherwise that would be nice.

Its hard to fight something with only one meter and the people that you pay, also installed it, and also say it works. 2151 gallons of water a day is alot of F'n water.

I can't believe it has been years and this is still an ongoing issue.

I am no water expert but you got a real problem. Have you contacted your district rep? Now that the GA is out of session they have the time.

I imagine you like myself like to do things 'the right way' and go through the system. Unfortunately, I am finding that going above some ones head (the higher the better) generally gets almost instantaneous results. Just a suggestion.

I haven't yet. They are suppose to come out April 27th to check the meter. However being it is the city I know they are going to shrug their shoulders and say its fine. I like to gather as much info as possible before talking to anyone. I have one or two more tests I want to perform. One filling a 1 gallon bucket and reading what the meter registers. And also I am going away for a few days. I plan on shutting the water off in the house. My wife swears our water line is connected to multiple houses.

Good plan. I would suggest you use gallon milk jugs and fill a few. Also number them and take pictures of the filled jugs. Take pics of the reading before and after and be sure the time stamp is on for documentation purposes.

About multiple lines....if you are stand alone newer dwelling....pretty unlikely...unless there is 'space/ between the meter and your home where it could be tapped by someone else. . But if you are in a row house arrangement it is always possible. Especially an older one where water lines tended to be 'common' lines.

Not a plumber just someone with experience with older homes. And just my thoughts.  Good luck!

Yea I find it hard to believe our line is tapped by another. Especially since about 4 years ago we had our main line replaced by a plumber. Fairly certain if he saw that he would have said something to me.   But I figured I would do it anyway just to cover my bases and to please the wife :)

Good idea too about doc the jugs. Could use the outdoor spout and fill the jugs right next to the meter and get real time results.

Excellent thinking. Take a shot of the meter fill a jug take another shot ....repeat. You may also want to take a picture of the meter readings as soon as you get up and then late in the evening prior to bedtime and water  usage should be down. Do that for a few days and see what you get. It should give you a good baseline to build your case. Again always time stamp.
