James Comey's abuse of power

344 posts in this topic

. . .  They are not the final adjudicators of the appropriateness of conduct for anyone they investigate. Instead, they build cases that they present in court, where their assertions are backed up by evidence that can be challenged by an opposing party and ultimately adjudicated by a judge or jury.

In a case where the government decides it will not submit its assertions to that sort of rigorous scrutiny by bringing charges, it has the responsibility to not besmirch someone’s reputation by lobbing accusations publicly instead.

In this case, Comey ignored those rules to editorialize about what he calledcarelessness by Clinton and her aides in handling classified information, a statement not grounded in any position in law. He recklessly speculated that Clinton’s email system could have been hacked, even while admitting he had no evidence that it was. This conjecture, which has been the subject of much debate and heated allegations, puts Clinton in the impossible position of having to prove a negative in response. . .

While Clinton shouldn’t have received special treatment, she does not deserve worse treatment from her government than anyone else, either. Yet by inserting himself into the middle of a political campaign and making unprecedented public assertions, that is exactly what Comey provided.

This hack should be fired.

Let the tea ladies investigate that.

I look forward to his testimony tomorrow to see what excuses he makes for himself.

Could be an interesting hearing, although the whole purpose of the hearing is so both sides can play to the their base.

The Republicans will question his competency and integrity because he didn't recommend an indictment.

The Democrats will question his competency and integrity because he explained why he didn't recommend an indictment.

It will be most interesting to see what happens to both Director Comey and AG Lynch next January.

It's funny how Republicans who were praising Comey a week ago now question his judgement because he didn't disqualify Hillary...

At least as funny as how the Democrats who were praising Comey a week ago now question his judgement because he didn't canonize Hillary...

It's almost better than a recommendation to be charged. This keeps her in the spotlight and being forced to answer questions she'd rather not have to. Comey made it clear Hillary is a liar, unreasonable and a poor manager.

Everything Comey said leading up to his saying there will be no charges recommended came off as an explanation as to why he would recommend charges. I believe most people were surprised to hear him say otherwise.

Because the evidence he put forth did not match the recommendation. Comey made it clear there was gross negligence on Clinton's part in handling classified information. He just used the non-legal term extreme carelessness.

Maybe your small world just consist of this forum...The folks on Morning Joe were shaking their heads and saying the evidence did not match the recommendation. Why do you think congress wants a chat with him?

Wow...TV pundits shaking their heads and rendering opinions!!!    Well, that does it for me flyB.  You're right!  Have your people to quash the FBI / DOJ ruling and bring Hillary in to answer for her transgression.  And hey, the collateral benefit will be your guy Trump who is not your guy may then have a cake walk to the White House and get started on that southern border wall to be billed to Mexico.

Absolutely. However, if you think, by some odd chance, that either side is interested in improving the lot of the American people, you need to seriously reconsider the level of your cynicism.

And I bet if he could have he also would have said in his judgement no unreasonable person should be president.

No, I don't believe neither side has any interest whatsoever "...in improving the lot of the American people...", just what is of interest to them and their respective side.  Cynicism pointing toward the truth.

Nothing will happen to Comey. His appointment is to 2023

Nope, that's the power of We the People in the vote to determine that and not one man or his one of a horde of government agencies.  We will determine who will be the president, not the FBI.

So it is written; so it shall be done!

This country.

Seems they are finally starting to see just how damaging Comey's statements were to Clinton politically. His remarks made it clear Clinton was on a fine line between being charged or not.

And that of course, is what matters the most, damaging the chances of a Democrat running for president.

It would help if you can convince your presidential candidate that there is something more to talk about than himself and all the daily injustices he suffers.
